I had missed this one. But it's a real, real problem. Hegseth is setting up the personnel of the military as in opposition to other elements of American society. It is shameful and dangerous (and also sorta just repeating lines from A Few Good Men).

It should alarm us that the civilian head of the military gathers together troops to give them a political speech in which he calls the free press treasonous.

He should be removed from office for doing so.
Hegseth: "A free press is of course important, but partisan activism that intentionally smears the troops and the historic mission that they are undertaking is fundamentally anti-American. It's sick. It's a national betrayal. It's treason."

"Those in attendance...received a book called “The War Department Field Manual,” a compilation of Hegseth’s past speeches. In a forward written by President Trump, the troops were told: “As your commander in chief, I will not ask you to fight dumb wars.”

This is so dumb. How to destroy a capable military.

Secretary of (Losing) Wars Hegseth rejects meritocracy. He doesn't want a military or service academies filled w/ the best people (no matter what color, gender, orientation, etc.), he wants a military that looks and thinks just like him. It's a recipe for incompetence, a topic on which he's expert.

You want an example of focusing on culture war bullshit instead of warfighting, THIS is it. Hegseth isn't worried about the fact that he's set US policy goals in the Gulf back literal decades, no, he's too busy monitoring soldiers' testosterone levels and reveling in what slurs he gets to use.

I'll say again, for a guy that actually was an officer, Hegseth has the most 3rd-grade school-boy vision of the military and war fighting imaginable. He thinks winning wars just means being able to blow stuff up bigger than the other guy.

The Jonathan Chatterton Friedersdorfs will be so very upset at this latest assault on American higher education.

Hegseth is completely unprepared for the thousands of long-form words and high-profile declarations from these extremely good faith defenders of free speech.
