campus sexual assault & its impact on survivors’ wellbeing, learning, mental health, & academic performance, it’s hard not to draw the conclusion that a pattern I noticed on women’s undergrad transcripts but not on men’s was in some cases due to SA trauma. That keeps bouncing around my head 3/

"Had law enforcement and prosecutors engaged more thoroughly with Jane Doe’s original complaint, they might have tempered the vigilantism that would eventually tinge much of the response to the case."

This is such a critical point (made by Jessica Winter via @newyorker.com)—and a lesson for others.

The dismal responses from both the D.A. and the university reveal a larger pattern of institutional carelessness.

Cornell University police in 2024 summarized hours of interviews with a woman who said she was attacked in the Chi Phi fraternity house into a document that excluded her unequivocal statement that she had been raped, documents show. A prosecutor did not pursue criminal charges based on the document.

Private universities having real police powere has always been a terrible idea, as student activists all understood when these departments where formed. Cornell is putting on a malfeasance clinic that might just help drive this point home
NYT today: victim "spoke for hours to a Cornell police investigator and an investigator from Cornell’s Title IX office." Cornell damage control from the beginning. You might improve university practices here, but my conclusion is the university has no good role to play in a criminal rape case.

Cornell is 💯 going to end up paying through the nose for this. I hope Jane Doe burns the institution to the ground.

“A university's obligation to the physical safety of its students is not one commitment among several, to be weighed against reputation or litigation exposure. It is antecedent to everything else the institution does.”

This comes as student journalists at The Cornell Daily Sun earned recognition for breaking the “Cornell Seven” story.

My daughter’s (female) high school Civics teacher is making them take an “empathetic” stance on the Cornell 7 and emailing the girls who got upset in class to “explain her approach” - but also to blame the lack of civility in society on their inclination to be upset.😠

One thing that i don’t see people noting about the Cornell Sun’s reporting on the rape case is that everyone who decided to take the risk and made the core decisions about what would be published is a woman

Whatever the (many) problems with police and prosecutors generally, adding the university layer just compounds the perverse incentives. It's insane that a (Cornell) Title IX officer was present during the (Cornell) police interview.

People following the Cornell case keep asking the same questions about Jane Doe. Why did she text one of the men afterward? Why didn't she call it rape right away? Why didn't she see herself as a victim from the start?

My last three articles take these questions on. 🧵
