Germany’s fuel-tax discount took effect at midnight, and petrol and diesel prices fell sharply by Thursday morning, with much of the relief initially reaching drivers. Prices began rising again by midday, while critics warned suppliers could retain part of the subsidy and economists questioned the measure’s cost.
