If Americans view, clip, share, and permanently enshrine an American public killing in a million ways on the internet, we will move towards fascist rituals of violence.

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Let us seek to end this inhumane and immoral practice around the world, especially here in America. It is so deplorable that in the 21st century this is going on in a modern democracy.

All executions are barbaric.

The primary difference with a public execution is that the barbarism is made obvious.

Mankind cannot bear that reality.

This past week: first the botched lethal injection of Christa Pike, and then capital punishment as mass entertainment. Reposting my argument that the death penalty is by definition incompatible with democratic government -- even when a majority votes for it. theconversation.com/why-the-deat...
Why the death penalty is incompatible with democracy
A democracy must respect the right to life of all its citizens.

Public executions are within living memory. Just look at the post-May 1945 LIFE magazine issues. After you get passed smiling women on the cover, the inside pages are filled with graphic images of public executions. One article even calls them "Yankee Justice"

"We hide our executions for the same reason we hide those we kill in war and the slaughter of animals; we want the glory of war…the taste of blood, but we recoil from the raw truth of our violence. Now we would broadcast the brutality at the core of the American project to the world." #giftArticle
Column | This 1814 painting captures the moral gravity of public executions
As most countries know, dramatizing the absolute power of the state almost always humanizes the condemned.

For instance, in 1292 there are two instances from Lancashire in which people who were hanged eventually escape. Both times it seems the executioners left before the people hanging had died and, as the records tell us, the people were cut down. Not one saw &/or stopped them from saving these people.

Teach!!!
Welcome to the killing fields...

Only Black & Brown people executions are planned and have picnics

As is American tradition

Whites will only be killed spontaneously if they should attempt to aid or see us as equals

Whenever I say I am opposed to the death penalty - which I would argue is consistent with, not contradictory to, my abolitionist worldview - people say the death penalty is necessary to deal with fascists. And don't get me wrong, I get the appeal, at least on an intuitive or emotional level.

Thread. I agree with all this. I will jokingly use "guillotine" rhetoric sometimes, and I will not personally be unhappy if certain well-known fascists got caught up in the machinery of death they operate. But it's still a death machine, and you don't throw *anyone* in the death machine. Ever.
