argument that AI will spread expert consensus & aid technocracy:

Reasonable (especially for intra-elite debate). But increasing role of experts & educated in governance is a longstanding trend (that this continues, not reverses); & still provokes backlash
How AI Will Reshape Public Opinion
Social media democratised public opinion, shifting influence away from elites and experts to ordinary people. LLMs will partly reverse this trend. They are a powerful, new technocratising force.

What it's mainly going to do is fuck us over in all manner of horrible ways, but apparently we can't uninvent it so we have to jump on the bandwagon. Bollocks.

87pc said they wanted governments to step in and regulate the use of AI, marking an 11pc rise since we asked the same question in July 2023

AI does not live “in the cloud.” It depends on energy, water, minerals, chips, data centres, labour and global supply chains.
Computational Metabolism maps these flows. Techno-colonialism asks who controls and benefits from them.

& here is your regular reminder that the most important sector full of jobs AI have eliminated wasn't by substitution but by eliminating revenue from newspapers. I've heard it suggested that Google's way they found to fund "the mind of god" is the cause of democratic backsliding. 3/3 #AIEthics #FoW

Interesting to compare with electronic calculators. We probably all got worse at mental arithmetic but they allowed many people to do what they couldn’t before. Not sure we’ve heard believable claims about the upside with AI though.
