AI boom lifts Swiss suppliers

AI data centers are drawing scrutiny in U.S. election debates and financial markets, while Swiss technology suppliers stand to benefit from the infrastructure boom.

And even that fails to consider the impact of my choice to engage with and even partially endorse AI tools. My main goal is to get starry-eyed "AI for everyone" institutions to back-the-F-up.

this could be a big deal:

“Investors are losing confidence that revenues from AI boom will be sufficient to support the vast debt piles financing data centres, pushing bonds backing some of the largest US infrastructure projects into increasingly stressed territory.”

This thought experiment illustrates the core problem of the last three decades of Silicon Valley: powerful tech harnessed by extraordinarily reductive and banal thinking about the actual problems facing humanity. An endless parade of rewarding reflexive action on half-baked wouldn't-it-be-cool-ifs
It also seems obvious that past the hypothetical tipping point on AI assistant use, firms in the many underregulated sectors of the economy will take advantage of agentic brittleness and vulnerabilities and the AI companies will simply have added another layer of cost, manipulation, and dysfunction
Humans need friction. So does the economy. Wrote about Musing Ourselves to Death & what a future where the internet transforms into a place for AI assistants to perfect commerce. Spoiler: We talked to some smart ppl & it would be chaos! w/ @matteowong.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Granting rights to an AI is ludicrous. Among other things, accountability and responsibility have no meaning to any such entity.
this basically amounts to giving corporations more rights and power... we cover this very argument in this 2024 paper

“We have seen the tech companies that, back in 2019, 2020, wanted us to see them as climate leaders, completely throw their targets out the window in order to pursue generative AI and this data center buildout.” Some data centers have even built “on-site gas plants.”
Regulation Should Target AI’s Current Harms, Not Superintelligence Possibilities
A mix of science fiction and delusion distracts from the real harms that we’re seeing, says tech journalist Paris Marx.

If artificial intelligence succeeds, humanity loses out as it takes away thinking from a younger generation. If it doesn’t triumph, investors are on the hook.
