He would do well to leave them to it
England was forced back into defense, and Tuchal responded by strengthening the set of players who were doing the defending. There was an alternative where he puts on a new attack and midfield, but his options for doing that were not well suited to meaningfully changing the balance of possession.

I don't remember ever feeling this disappointed after an England defeat (and I remember every tournament since the 1980 Euros). Maybe a combination of expectation (the best Eng team for decades), the cynical play of Argentina, and the nature of our capitulation in the last 20 minutes :-(

Yeah I don't think Tuchel handled it well but I think we saw (over multiple games) that he is contending with a team culture that leads to players playing with fear in these moments.

As so often it’s not the defeat that rankles, it’s the manner of it. Good teams being hamstrung by overpaid coaches making tactical decisions just to show how clever they are. Let good players play and go out with a bang not a whimper. It’s really not as complicated as the likes of Tuchel pretend.

Some of the squad selection seemed weird. We knew Rice was struggling and Reece James struggles. And I still don’t understand why no TAA.
Good piece. The first game where Tuchel didn't notably improve things in a hydration break, too, but I think the original sin here was just 'not taking anyone who could plausibly fill in for a visibly knackered Declan Rice' - a problem throughout the tournament.

People are confusing cause and effect. If you watch the ~12 min of play (minus celebration and hydration) between the goal and when Konsa comes on at the 72nd minute, England have completely lost the ability to retain possession, Argentina have already almost scored multiple times.

He was reacting to the fact that Argentina was cutting through and getting crosses and chances. That’s why he went 5 at the back but that then also relies on his two more forward lines getting the ball and they couldn’t which is why they sat back. That’s and the players just weren’t good enough with
