Throughout the afternoon, Giorgia Meloni's two main allies in the Italian government, Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, posted messages on social media to pressure the prime minister to suspend the Schengen Area with Spain. Sources close to the premier told ABC that, indeed, "it is being considered" to take this step. After 9:15 p.m., the head of the government confirmed that they are weighing the possibility. "The images coming from Ceuta are shocking and demonstrate, once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a real threat to the security of Europe's borders," Meloni wrote on social media. She warned: "I have met with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. Italy will not stand by with folded arms. We are summoning the competent authorities and, after these meetings, we are prepared to intervene even with extraordinary measures to defend the borders and the safety of citizens, such as suspending the Schengen Area with Spain."

The government deployed the army in Ceuta in response to thousands of people entering from Morocco. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has summoned the Italian ambassador after Italian President Giorgia Meloni suggested suspending the Schengen treaty with Spain due to the Ceuta migrant crisis. "This message is inappropriate from the foreign minister of a partner and friend country from whom we expect European solidarity and not partisan demagoguery," the minister wrote on social media, in reply to a post by his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani. In that post, Meloni's minister suggested that the Ceuta situation was tied to the regularization policy put in place by the government. "The images arriving from Ceuta show how Madrid's decision to grant Spanish, and therefore European, citizenship to more people."
