basically if I drive out of town, that is a minimum 80 mi round trip, which at 12.9mi/gal requires about 6.29 gallons of gas. which at current cheapest in town of $6.21/gal requires $39.06 So about a buck a mile.
So, doing the math? I would have to get gas at $4.34/gal or less, to BREAK EVEN

I buy food and basic household goods — almost no gas (mostly public transit) no media purchases (piracy or existing books/movies/games I already owned) or unnecessary travel. I do shop local art events and small businesses, and try to support other creatives when possible.

California has a gas tax about 30¢ higher than Oregon, plus a 2.25% sales tax on that total.
That works out to about 4.77 becoming 5.20.
In addition, SoCal uses summer gas for longer, which may influence some providers, even in NorCal, to adjust prices upward.
