I see quite a few herons on my walks but they are often too far away for me to get a good shot or I accidentally disturb them!
Today at the very low River Wey in the middle of Farnham I came across this little one.

It didn’t seem at all bothered about me as it was intent on finding a fish. The river was crystal clear and very low. There were no signs of any fish there at all!

Black-tailed Godwit

#birds #photography #ECK
A Black-tailed Godwit stands in shallow blue water, its long, straight, slightly upturned pink-and-black bill pointing to the left. Its warm brown, intricately patterned plumage contrasts with its pale belly, while its long dark legs create gentle ripples around its feet. The calm water provides a striking, almost mirror-like reflection of the bird, stretching down beneath it and adding a lovely sense of symmetry to the photograph. Interesting facts: Black-tailed Godwits are remarkable long-distance migrants, with some travelling thousands of kilometres between their breeding and wintering grounds. Their exceptionally long bills are perfectly adapted for probing deep into mud and soft ground for worms, insects and other invertebrates. They also have a distinctive black-and-white tail pattern, which gives them their name. In the UK and Ireland, they are particularly associated with wetlands, estuaries and coastal mudflats.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron preens in the early morning light at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron perches on a log extending from the pond toward the camera. The heron is seen in left profile, with its neck and head turned back over its body as it carefully preens its feathers. The background is entirely pond water, reflecting the orange-red color of a small Kubota excavator on the bank that is being used for construction. The unexpected reflection adds a striking warmth and unique character to the scene. A beautiful, quiet moment of a great blue heron in the wetlands habitat so vital to its existence

Big baby tree swallow for #BirdOfTheDay #50ShadesOfGrey #Fledglings

📷🌿🪶
A photo of a fledgling tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) perched on a thin bare twig with a few out of focus green leaves in the foreground below it and a blurry pale gray body of water in the background behind it. It's a small passerine bird with brownish-gray upperparts (rather than the iridescent blue-green of an adult) and bright yellow gape flanges at the corners of its beak. It faces right with its wings folded neatly against its body and its head turned back over its shoulder toward the left of frame.

#Birds Atlantic Birding @atlanticbirding.bsky.social says tToday’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #50ShadesOfGrey; birds with grey plumage. Here's one of my favourite bird species, Flycatchers, specifically the Alder Flycatcher.
A small bird facing right, is perched on the tip of a conifer branch against a brilliant blue sky. The sunlit bird is varying shades of grey with an off-white breast & wing bars.

The picture shows a young robin, recognisable by its mottled plumage and the subtle orange colouring on its throat. Characteristics: Young robins do not yet have the bright red breast of adult birds, but instead have a brown, lightly mottled plumage that helps them blend into the undergrowth.

Good Morning & Happy Saturday Everybody!

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is:

#50ShadesOfGrey; birds with grey plumage

Alt. is #Fledglings; any newly fledged bird

- a juvenile Spotted Flycatcher in the forest
- a very fluffy looking young BullFinch

#birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography
A Spotted Flycatcher perched on a branch of a fallen tree in the forest. The bird is in side profile, on the end of a broken branch, to the left of the shot. Its right side is showing to the camera. It has a Grey-brown head, back and wings with streaks on the head and lighter brown on the tips of the secondaries. It has a thin beak, typical of insect eaters, with some bristles at the base. Its underside is whitish with brown streaks on the chest. The background is out of focus greens and browns of the forest with some white circles of dappled light. A juvenile Bullfinch sitting on a bare, lichen covered, tree top. The bird is right of frame on a horizontal branch with two vertical branches in front of its head. Its left side is showing. It’s head is a reddish brown, with no black cap seen in the adults, this colouration continues down its shoulders and chest, turning to a whitish colour as it’s gets to the rump and underbelly. The bird’s feathers have a downy texture giving it a fluffy appearance. A single, upright, willow stem is behind the bird, giving some fresh green colour. The background is a bright white sky.

A large juvenile Great Blue Heron perched on a sturdy branch within a nest built high up in a sand pine tree. The heron faces left with its dagger-like beak open, revealing its pale tongue against a backdrop of a bright, clear blue sky. Crisp green pine needles frame the bird from the foreground and sides, partially obscuring a second, lower heron nestled quietly within the twigs of the nest structure.

A crested guinea fowl stands in the centre, looking straight ahead at the camera. The bird has a round body with dark grey plumage that is completely covered in fine white spots. Its neck is slender and dark. On its almost bare, bluish head sits a small, brown, horn-like crest. Particularly striking are the large, bright red throat flaps beneath its pale beak. The guinea fowl stands on an uneven, natural forest floor strewn with dried leaves and small stones, which blurs into the background.

Common Ground Dove (Columbina passerina) juvenile is #50ShadesofGrey for #BirdoftheDay. It is a young bird. Not positive it qualifies as a #Fledgling, but maybe! It was unusual to see this species in our suburban #backyard. They prefer more open habitat. #bird #Florida
A juvenile Common Ground Dove is facing left, perched on a rough, bark covered branch, with another large gray branch in the background and greenery behind that. The bird is various shades of gray, with some warm beige, black and white spots in the wings. The feet are pink, the beak is orange-y with a dark tip, and the eye is dark red with a black pupil. the breast and head feathers are fresh looking with lighter edges, creating a scalloped look, and this plumage indicates it is a young bird.

Did you get the film line reference? First film, Charlie Tango is the name of Mr Grey's chopper. The films are genuinely fascinating from a character perspective, and the soundtracks are decent too. This photograph which I took on a grey day in Volendam, Netherlands, reminded me of a helicopter on a launch pad on top of a tall building. A black-headed gull (feel free to disagree bird folks) sits atop a folded patio umbrella centre stage. In the background is a small jetty with a little wooden hut at the end. Behind is a vast expanse of water with the outline of a sliver of land and a boat on the horizon. Dark clouds loom overhead.
