"Celestial Nymphs"
An Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The tradition of dance, honed for over a millennium, was almost lost in the Cambodian genocide.

An Apsara Dancer from Cambodia in a traditional dance pose. Khmer classical dancers use stylized movements and gestures to convey meaning and tell a story. These gestures are often vague and abstract while some may be easily understood. The apsara, a woodland spirit, is played by a woman, sewn into a tight-fitting traditional dress whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories. The tradition of dance, honed for over a millennium, was almost lost in the Cambodian genocide when the Khmer Rouge targeted those involved in the dance and "imposed a massive cultural forgetting". In 2003, UNESCO declared the dance a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Culture", and laid plans for a regeneration of the art form. An Apsara Dancer from Cambodia in a traditional dance pose. As the sun rises in Luang Prabang around 200 Buddhist monks depart from their various temples to gather their daily meal. It is a solemn ritual and completely authentic, where both monks and the faithful continue a centuries-old tradition.

As monks file past the line of alms-givers - who are usually sitting or kneeling on the street - the monk`s bowls are reverently filled with handfuls of sticky rice or bananas. It's one of the most vivid images of Laos - from 5:30 in the morning onward, silent lines of saffron-clad monks walk down the streets of Luang Prabang to collect alms. As monks file past the line of alms-givers - who are usually sitting or kneeling on the street - the monk`s bowls are reverently filled with handfuls of sticky rice or bananas. I was ashamed to be here today. A young girl in a short skirt and low-cut top runs to the front of the line. Her camera flashes are blinding the monks. Another lady touches a monk as she puts her arm around him to take a selfie. He recoils at the transgression. Some of the locals and the monks are considering canceling this age old tradition. A young monk files past an alms-giver - who is sitting on a stool. The monk`s bowl is reverently filled with handfuls of sticky rice or bananas. The locals sit or kneel. I was told not to position myself higher than the monks' heads. The best rice for the tak bat ritual is prepared by the alms-givers themselves. The locals wake up early to prepare a batch of sticky rice, which they then scoop generously into each monk's bowl as the line files past.

This year, I embraced a quiet, more gentle zen approach to the holidays without expectation.

While it was no picture perfect Hallmark movie, it sure felt nourishing.

A monk leaps into the air like an athlete. Their dances are symbolic retellings of Tibetan Buddhist mythology or particular teachings, but to the uninitiated, they make a colourful and mysterious spectacle.
