Harriet Tubman #quilt by my Mom, Vera P. Hall, who makes quilts celebrating Black people who fought for their own freedom. This seems to be the crowd favorite of the “We Didn’t Wait for Freedom” series. Happy #Juneteenth #quilting

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but also a reminder: freedom delayed is freedom denied. #Juneteenth #BlackHistory #FreedomDay #NeverForget

On June 19th, 1865, federal forces arrived in Texas and finally announced that all enslaved people in Texas were now free.

Today, we are STILL fighting for equal representation for all Texans as our rights are under attack through racial gerrymandering and restrictions on voting rights. #Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. This monumental news came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and effectively marked the end of slavery in the United States. #juneteenth

Happy #Juneteenth! On this day we celebrate freedom and our commitment to the fight against racism. Our struggles were born from the same roots. Our struggles are one. Su lucha es mi lucha. Together we are more powerful.

✨JUNETEENTH MUTUAL AID THREAD ✨

Here’s a thread with Black folks you can support in celebration of #Juneteenth.

Do some good - even if you’re sending $3 to a Black person to treat themselves to a dessert or a coffee!

Circulate & give to at least one person in the thread if you have the means 💜

Remember how the US fought a war to illegalize owning humans for forced labor, and a whole bunch of the losers decided NOT TO TELL said humans so they could continue extracting from them for YEARS?

A #Juneteenth lesson: the US has a long history of not letting human rights get in the way of profit.

“.. ‘Our history and achievements are being belittled .. and it is intentional. But I believe that intent can work both ways. .. We wanted to show him on #Juneteenth what it looks like when people are intentional about showing our history.’”

I feel like people need reminding: We have acknowledged #Juneteenth here for generations, without acknowledgement from the federal gov’t or corporate sponsorship. We will continue to do so. Them folks can only gentrify our holiday if we let them.

Here’s the thing about #Juneteenth:

It is the only Holiday recognizing that freedom and democracy take ongoing effort and dedication.

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation occurred more than two years before being enforced in Texas.

A good lesson in these difficult times.
On Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom and recommit ourselves to the work that remains undone. We remember that even in the darkest hours, there is cause to hope for tomorrow’s light.

If you've seen the Juneteenth flag, but don't know its history or what it means, you can read about it in the words of Ben Haith, the man who designed it.

Happy Emancipation Day! ✊🏽 #Juneteenth
