2026 appears to be the year when Green Woodpecker became twitchable in #Northumberland. Birders heading for a lone bird at Mitford this week. Never 'common' but used to be found at many widespread sites...a sad start to the year. #fieldnotes #BirdNotes #BirdSketches #BirdArt
This bird wintered around our garden in 2010. One flying south along the coast path was unexpected. Full note treatment for one at tree barren Boulmer.

A photo from inside the rocks at Devil’s Den at Gettysburg. (A small narrow path through large rocks.) Gettysburg was the turning point of the US Civil War. While Devil’s Den became a bloody cauldron of close-quarter chaos, the high ground just above it, Little Round Top, was the vantage point of Union sharpshooters. These men lay hidden among the granite outcroppings, taking deadly aim at Confederate troops struggling to advance through the tangle of boulders and brush below in Devil’s Den. Many of the sharpshooters were expert marksmen- skilled hunters before the war. They were taught to breathe slow, fire between heartbeats, and they often fired from prone positions wedged in stone cracks, sometimes using specially scoped rifles (rare for the time). **This wasn’t anonymous cannon fire. It was personal deliberate shooting often over hundreds of yards.
