The photograph captures a quiet, almost dreamlike interior in stark black and white. A solitary, blurred figure stands behind a glass wall in the distance, partially obscured by layers of reflection, light, and architectural structure. Dark railings cut sharply across the foreground, creating a visual barrier between the viewer and the figure. The overwhelming brightness and soft focus give the scene a sense of distance and emotional detachment. The person appears present yet unreachable—as though separated from the world by more than glass. Strong vertical lines, geometric railings, and the receding architecture emphasize isolation, while the hazy figure becomes almost ghostlike. There is a haunting ambiguity to the image: it feels simultaneously like a moment of observation and a moment of disappearance. A photograph about distance, isolation, and the feeling of being seen without truly being reached. Art copyright ©Yves Broeckx Photo, concept and execution by Yves

“today’s self-portrait” is a tender reflection on fragility and persistence. The sunflower, wilted and curling inward, mirrors the weight of fatigue yet holds a quiet strength in its stance. With muted golds and soft shadows, the piece invites viewers to see beauty not only in flourishing, but in the grace of simply enduring. “Disremember Me” — a study in anonymity, identity, and the weight of being seen.

“Disremember Me” presents a stark black-and-white self-portrait interrupted by thick, deliberate strokes of pink impasto, masking myfacial features entirely. The tension between the photograph’s sharp realism and the chaotic abstraction of paint evokes themes of erasure, self-preservation, lack of self-confidence and resistance to definition. In a world obsessed with image, this piece offers a refusal — a quiet scream of reclamation through obscurity. Art copyright ©Yves Broeckx

A self-portrait in a mixed media collage, the centre is dominated by a broken mirror with red gems over which an old pair of my glasses has been glued. The rest of the piece features various broken electronics and cables, broken shards of glass, painted over in red, purple, and black splotches. The shattered visage of the Joker can be seen above the mirror, and the whole piece is covered in plasters/band-aids.

Self-Portrait (Inn of the Dawn Horse) by Leonora Carrington (British-Mexican) - Oil on canvas / c. 1937-1938 - Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) #WomenInArt #art #WomanArtist #WomensArt #WomenArtists #FemaleArtist #ArtText #LeonoraCarrington #Carrington #TheMET #Self-Portrait #SelfPortrait
The self portraitt depicts an interior space empty walls, ceiling, and tiled floor with a curtained window revealing a lush, green forest view and a white horse galloping in the distance. Sporting white jodhpurs (tight-fitting trousers) and a wild mane of hair, Carrington is perched on the edge of a chair in this curious, dreamlike scene, with her hand outstretched toward a dark prancing and lactating hyena and an off-white tailless rocking horse flying behind her. The white of her breeches mirrors the white color of both horses, and her green jacket reflects the forest exterior. She gazes out to us directly and sternly. Born in Lancashire to an English industrialist, Leonora Carrington spent her childhood on a country estate surrounded by animals and reading fairy tales. She revisited these memories in her adulthood, creating paintings populated with real and imagined creatures. Here, the white horse, which Carrington used as her symbolic surrogate, gallops freely into the verdant landscape beyond the curtained window. Carrington began the painting in London in 1937 and completed it in Paris in 1938. It is one of her most recognized works and has been called her "first truly Surrealist work." The presence of horses and hyenas soon became a common feature in her work. In the late 1930s, when this painting was created, Carrington was in a deep relationship with German surrealist artist Max Ernst. He was arrested by the Gestapo in France in 1940 because his art was considered by the Nazis to be "degenerate" but, luckily, Ernst managed to flee to the U.S. with the help of Peggy Guggenheim. Carrington escaped the horrors of WWII thanks to a marriage of convenience with poet and Mexican ambassador to Spain, Renato Leduc, who she had met via Pablo Picasso. She took Mexican nationality in 1942 after many European artists fled to the North American country in search of asylum—which she grew to love and where she lived, on and off, for the rest of her life.

This is the third time I've ever tried to paint a self-portrait. And the first time, I didn't paint it over partway through.
Anyway, here I am eating dinner in LA at Catch. The Hollywood Hills are behind me. From a friend's photo taken several weeks ago.
