From yesterday, a hatchling Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta), found in an open field hundreds of feet from a wetland. This tiny turtle overwintered in the nest, waiting for spring rains before emerging from the egg (note the white egg tooth). #herps #turtles 🌿

Beale's four-eyed turtle is named as such for it's distinct 4 eye like markings on the top of its head and is such a cool little turtle. It is named after Thomas Beale who was a Scottish Naturalist.

A box turtle, I believe a male because of eye color, proceeds slowly through stubby green grass with two yellow flowers visible. His head and neck are orange and black, and his shell is a duller yellower and black.

I've shown you the Yellow-headed Box Turtle, now get ready for the Yellow-Margined Box Turtle! In traditional Chinese their name is 食蛇龜 which translates to 'Snake-eating turtle.' Unfortunately as usual for Asian turtles they are Endangered due to the 'medicinal' trade.

This is the smallest and therefore probably youngest Eastern Box Turtle I've ever seen. I took the stick home and measured it so I can say with certainty that the turtle was 3 1/8 inch (8 mm) long.

I've covered the Northern River Terrapin before but this is the Southern River Terrapin, a very unique turtle found in Malaysia, Cambodia and Indonesia. They are unfortunately classified as critically endangered due to their use in local 'medicine'.
