The memorial to the Maquis of the Vallèe d’Azurgues, at Guerry, Chamelet. Camp Desthieux created by Roger Chavanet (GUERIN) 1943. The story of the Maquis threads through the Ecrivelo Book, never far from the surface.

I was writing about the crash of an American B24 Liberator in France for my book Écrivélo. "the people of the village had collected the bodies together."
A grammar check has suggested that "The Village People had ...."
I think not.😬 #histbookchat #WWIIhistory

Picken was one of several crew hospitalised after the crash, later held as a POW. After the war he settled in North Arm Cove, Australia. He died there on 1 October 2003. No children.

His relatives have shared photographs — they'll appear properly in Écrivélo.

We believe Sutton may have died in the West Country — unconfirmed. If you know more, we'd genuinely like to hear from you.

More on the Admiral Prune crew, and getting their stories right, in Écrivélo.

CHARLES ARSÉNE MARIZY was the shortest serving mayor in Chamelet’s history - just 57 days.
In Écrivélo- I have written a lot about his successor, his life, short period as Mayor and death in a Nazi Concentration Camp.

On 19th December 1943 - 81 years ago at around 6:30am. This place the Cazaban barn at Le Cocon was destroyed by the Occupying forces of Nazi Germany. The maquis had already fled to St Cyr.

The name may be familiar for another reason: after the war, Pierre Belvès became a well known French children's book illustrator, working for years on the Père Castor series at Flammarion. More in my book, Écrivélo.

An inspection panel from the Mosquito recovered when it crashed in the Fôret du Brou in July 44.

In my book Écrivélo, I discuss the Saucepans for Spitfires campaign of the 1940’s and why the scheme went full circle in this part of France.

Colin Panton's grave once carried a different name — he enlisted under an alias, only untangled by
police after the war.
His own brother wrote a memoir of their RAF days. He knew the truth. Never wrote it.
A forensic odontologist helped close the case. Full story in Écrivélo.

The three crews at the heart of Écrivélo saw their last view of England along this coast — though
not exactly here.
Three aircraft. Three nights, months apart. Each one crossing into total blackout, guided by nothing
but stars.

The RAF Bomber Command Memorial stands above Beachy Head — where bombers crossed into
total blackout, guided by stars alone.
The three crews at the heart of Écrivélo made that same crossing. Eighteen young men. Eleven
never came home.

26 May 1940: Dunkirk's beaches full of men waiting for boats.
Days earlier, a Flight Sergeant jumped from a train at Étaples. Concussed, no money, 31 km to Boulogne. Someone got him on one of the last ships out.
Four years on, he was navigating an aircraft over Ternand.

His name is Roger Chavanet.
He survived. He walked again. He kept leading his group from a house in a hamlet called Dième — hidden with his wife Marguerite and their 18-month-old daughter.
Three months later, he would witness something in these hills.

Something in the archives about the 1944 Worry Bird crash doesn't match the official record.
It'll take careful writing to do it justice.
