Like other bees, eastern carpenter bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Xylocopa virginica) enjoy flower pollen and nectar. This individual was in a greenhouse checking out the marigolds (Asteraceae: Tagetes sp.). Blissfield Michigan, 29 May 2011.

The fruit of the shrubby vines known as bittersweet (Celastraceae: Celastrus sp.) are hard capsules that split open to reveal the sugary flesh inside. They provide a late-season food source for ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Waterloo State Recreation Area near Chelsea Michigan, 21 Oct 2012.
