#12TET
you ever sit and think about how insane 12TET is. like with only minor drift from the pythagorean ratios on a couple of intervals we're able to have a system of notes that functions regardless of key. thats fucking amazing

I hope there's an art movement specifically to reject the type of aesthetics computers can easily copy.

Music that doesn't have the beat perfectly on-grid with vocals that aren't pitch corrected to perfect 12tet.

Photos taken with the lens stopped down.

Drawings of people holding hands.

the way i end up handling this is just to be okay with the G/B major third sounding a lil wonky. 12tet is so normalized that you're probably used to the wonky major third anyway
A friend just asked me why the G string of his guitar always sounds out of tune on his guitar, and this is a public service announcement for anyone else who's bothered by this: the guitar can't be in tune with itself.

firmly of the opinion "pitch correction" is an awful term because it (generally) implies A440 12tet is correct pitch and you're making vocal pitch more correct by making it more A440 12tet which is complete bollocks since adaptive just intonation exists and blue notes exist

there's only 12 notes. i tell my students this all the time. there's only twelve notes. you cant come up with anything new. chord progressions, melodies, w/e, like. its pretty much all been done. they solved 12TET with jazz theory. but to me, this isnt a problem. its beauty

i love how i started the OP with a question as if other people are just sitting around thinking about the beauty of 12tet like thats a normal person thing to do

En palabras técnicas para los que sabéis un poco más: la mayor riqueza tonal de la música árabe no está en la microtonalidad, en usar 24TET en lugar de 12TET, sino sobre todo en esa dimensión extra con la que se juega.

Neo-riemannian music theory is interesting, it asks: what kinds of rotations can you do with triads? What properties are preserved? What axes of symmetry are there in 12tet? Etc.

A short PDF primer on it:

#SynthSky what features should a #modular quantizer have? Planning:

* 8 selectable scales
* Different temperaments (12TET default)
* User accessible calibration pots
* Tuner/Note display
* Input signal multed for simple diatones/interesting modulation

Modular synths are not for everyone, but they are definitely for me! I absolutely love patching this thing from scratch 🤓

Other signs you might love modular include thinking:
- You would rather die than use presets
- Money isn't real
- 12TET is a prison for your boundless creativity

ASMR music theory girlfriend explains to you how her 16EDO xenharmonic tuning system makes so much more sense than 12TET

one thing I'm trying to move away from is having instruments that are strictly 12tet, everything is symmetrically spaced perfectly. before digital synths we didn't have this. no piano or guitar, etc could ever be perfectly "in tune"

my hot opinion as someone who likes 12tet as a system is that calling non-12tet microtonal as opposed to 12tet not being microtonal is basically the same as calling cis people 'normal' frankly I prefer thinking of 12tet as a particularly pervasive microtonal tuning system

i do think any systematic teaching of music theory in the 21st century should probably include basic acoustics and non 12tet (let alone non-western) scales right?

even without whinging about fairness or standards or transparency or whatever I really want to put emphasis on how the popular use of pitch correction just sounds like shit, uncanny like perfect midi guitar, I'm basically never going "yes this sounds good snapped to exactly a440 12tet I'm glad"

disagree, the 12tet system even though it is a compromise has given rise to a beautiful and incredible set of Tonal Possibilities that all carry cultural meaning

Nor Thanks i have my hands full with 12tet already

i'm a tuning pluralist i think everyone should tune to a different fundamental A with different systems and temperaments. no one should play in the same tuning except like i guess you can use 12tet for playing schoenberg
