This monk is being seized by death so it's good to see that he's got his reading material with him, safely ensconced in his book bag (Rijksmuseum, 16thC )

@united.com gives you "free" "travel bank cash" but to actually use it you must survive 3 trials:

1. six hours on phone
2. tolerate agents inexplicably cancelling & rebooking different parts of travel & payment 5 times
3. be flayed alive like a 16thC heretic

#unitedairlines <3 Id rather walk.

DYK toward the end of 16thC, Seville’s Holy #Inquisition burned 75 men at the stake in an #AutoDaFé? It first tortured them into confessing the “pecado nefando”—#QueerSex, #AnalSex, or #bestiality. Ghosts of #HistSex still haunt. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com #sodomy #zoophilia

Maybe TREGIAN'S GROUND by Anne Cuneo, fr. @andotherstories.bsky.social? It's about people fleeing persecution across the Channel in small boats: 16thC Catholics escaping England for safe haven in France. And pandemics (the Black Death). A wonderful evocation of life, music & culture in Tudor London.

The "balsam balm" harvest combines the French word "balm" and its Latin root balsamum, which refers to a resinous, fragrant, & soothing substance derived from certain plants. Book of Simple Medicines. Origin: West France. Date: 16thC, around 1520-1530. Manuscript in Latin illuminated on parchment.

Oct 13: Feast of Comgan (8thC), abbot. Irishman who founded a church at Loch Alsh, near Skye, where his cult still flourished in the early 16thC. Dedications are predominantly in the west of Scotland with important outliers in Easter Ross and Turriff, Aberdeenshire. 📸Eusebius

Which Heron was it? The image in post 1 shows a white egret, which the Florentine Codex entry identifies as a snowy egret. Nahuatl names often grouped similar birds, so other herons probably counted too like a Bare Throated Tiger Heron.

Like, Tradition says that use of York (the other archbishop in England) dies out after 1400, and episcopal uses even earlier. Yet there are books printed for "use of York" and even ruddy "use of Hereford" in the early 16thc so um what? And what texts do those contain?? Ringing silence from the field

In the 16thC a wide wall was created along the side of the Thames to protect the low-lying marshy area at Wapping from flooding. Wapping High Street developed on top of the wall, eventually lined with tall wharves and warehouses. Many have now been converted into apartments.

Y'all should be so lucky. Henry was accomplished in the martial arts of the 16thC nobility until a jousting accident. He was a noted composer and musician. He patronised the arts, bringing Holbein to England. He commissioned great architecture.

There is no evidence he enjoyed public executions.

Today I showed my 'Dissertation: Editing Project' students a selection of documents from my personal collection, as preparation for an @ncllibspeccoll.bsky.social NCL Special Collections workshop they'll be going to on Thursday. They seemed to enjoy it.

In the 16thC London's Hyde Park was part of a network of Henry VIII's hunting grounds. It gradually became a private royal park where the aristocracy and affluent could parade and be seen. Read here about the playground of Tudor and Stuart monarchs www.thehistoryoflondon.co.uk/hyde-park-pl...
