Oh my GOD this essay is good.
The essay on Ed Tech by Annie McClanahan and Louise McCune. In the mid-196os, mainstream macroeconomist William J. Baumol became interested in a surprising topic: the problem of "the starving artist." In a canonical essay, "On the Performing Arts: An Anatomy of Their Economic Problems," Baumol and his co-author William G. Bowen concluded that musicians were paid poverty wages because "the live performing arts" was unable to implement transformative "technological economies" (Baumol and Bowen 1965, 495). A follow-up essay in 1967 extended this analysis by dividing all economic activities into two types: "technologically progressive activities," in which technological innovations and economies of scale allowed "output per man hour" to increase progressively, and "nonprogres-sive" activities, “which by their very nature, permit only sporadic increases in productivity" (Baumol 1967, 415-16). In the later essay, Baumol's key example of a "nonprogressive" activity wasn't violin playing but teaching: "Despite the invention of teaching machines," Baumol noted, "there still seem to be fairly firm limits" to productivity growth in education, which meant it would persistently lag "productivity in the remainder of the econ-omy" (416).

The apostrophe in dates was adopted back in the day of manual typewriters with only one built-in font. The "O" did not look appreciably different from a zero, and so 1960s would look like 196Os (196 + Os). Potentially confusing upon first reading.

When you’re the boss of the FDA they have to let you try all the drugs, right?
In an apparent effort to encourage FDA employees to stay true to their mission of making Americans healthier, Kennedy later also referenced the CIA's Project MKUltra - a notorious human experimentation program from the 196os - and the Milgram experiment, a well-known study meant to test people's willingness to obey authority even if it meant inflicting pain on others.

Reading older literature on housing, this one is from 1993, is always interesting. Things have moved very little since then.
ZONING IN INNER-CITY LOW-DENSITY RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOODS Perhaps the strongest evidence for the economic significance of land-use controls is the persistence of low-density residential neighbourhoods in the central areas of Toronto and Vancouver. In both cities, the unanticipated intrusion of high-density residential developments in middle and upper-income low-den-sity neighbourhoods in the 196os led to political pressures for more protective zoning. The result in both cities was a virtual cessation of high-rise development in existing low-density neighbourhoods where, moreover, citizen pressure on politicians has led to the progressive enactment of increasingly detailed regulation of low-scale redevelopment.7 The Vancouver and Toronto experiences provide illuminating evidence of the nature of the demand for certainty which underlies the pressure for zoning controls in existing neighbourhoods. On the margin, the shadow price associated with the density constraints built into zoning regulations would appear to be high. & Nevertheless, the demand for inner-city land used for single-family housing has been increased by the perceived stability of land uses in such areas, and this has encouraged substantial investment in the renovation of inner-city housing along with an increase in its market value. Hockney settled in Los Angeles in 1964. An especially iconic example from a group of double portraits of friends and associates from the 196os, this painting depicts the contemporary-art collectors Fred and Marcia Weisman in the sculpture garden of their Los Angeles home. As stiff and still as the objects surrounding them, the couple stands apart, his stance echoed in the totem pole to the right, hers in the Henry Moore sculpture behind her. Brilliant light flattens the scene and sets the couple in sharp relief; they seem oblivious to each other as well as to their art.

From the eighteenth century, anglophone parents (possibly with a sense of relief at having some time to them-selves) had sent their children off to Sunday School, one of the chief success stories of the Evangelical Revival. From the late 196os, they stopped doing so. British statistics tell the tale: in 1900, 55% of British children attended Sunday School, 24% in 1960, 9% in 1980, and 4% in 2000. Traditional Christian literacy, handed down the generations across the UK by such means, began to erode, and the habit a hurch-going along with it?

I love Jack Kirby's wilder costume designs that he did outside of Marvel or DC.
Pleading The Fourth (Above:) Named "Robot Defender" either by Jack, or by fans who first saw this piece exhibited at his convention apperances, this character was one of many presentation pieces Kirby created in the mid-196os, while biding his time waiting for a better offer than Marvel's publisher Martin Goodman would make. When DC Comics came a-callin', this dude could well have ended up in Jack's New Gods series, had it continued a year or two longer. In the early 196os he went to Ethiopia, where he taught English, met Emperor Haile Selassie and took up playing jazz piano. He also worked freelance for the BBC World Service, reporting on earthquakes and revolutions all over Africa.
