I stumbled across this collection of the great Ron Cobb at a campus comics shop when I was starting out as a political cartoonist for the Ohio State Lantern. I'd never seen such ferocious cartoons before.

National Lampoon doesn't get enough credit for its profound influence on comics. Creative, experimental, brilliant comics, the finest of the era. I started buying the Lamp at age 12. It had a lasting influence.

I discovered Bill Mauldin when I was 13 at the small local library in my hometown.
His work, and his astounding DIY resourcefulness, has inspired me my whole career.

In 1977, Metal Hurlant and Moebius came to America at last. I was losing interest in moribund 1970s comics by then. Hurlant restored me.
And I just drew a story for Hurlant’s 50th anniversary issue! Dream realized!

I was 11 years old when Jack Kirby blew my mind with the Fourth World. I didn't fully comprehend what I was reading, but the sheer creativity of it left me giddy. Still does. I'll never part with my full set.

Probably the lynchpin of everything I like about superhero comics and had wanted to accomplish in my own work

Conan #3, 1971. The moment we realized, holy shit, this title is special. Narrative like we'd never seen before. Read it in the hallway of my grade school as my teacher told Mom I had to stop drawing in class.

Manhunter, by Archie Goodwin & Walt Simonson. In 1973, we were mesmerized by this post-modern superhero. This was back when post-modern was rare, and not the norm.
The Artists Edition is essential. I study it often.

I landed at Ohio State at age 19, unsure of what future to pursue.
The school paper had a fantastic political cartoonist. Every morning I read his stuff. I could do something like this, I thought.
So I did.
