#2party
A new and better party won’t be effective as long as you have a 2party winner take all election system.

Labour = neo conservatives is what you get in FPTP 2party state

I’d argue the winner-takes-all presidency is the ultimate forcing function. Even if the 2party system were to “break”, it would reassert itself as it did within a decade of ratification. EC forces coalitions into a tent *before* elections, there’s no mechanism for small factions to insert themselves
I was a comparativist rather than an Americanist, so maybe I'm missing something, but the two-party system seems to be the result of some deeply embedded Article I stuff, the effect of which is to in-house coalition politics

Tad older (baby boomer) & up until recently (May '22) never questioned political system. Just accepted (brainwashed) choice was Lib or Lab. Turns out 2party duopoly system is construct of career polies, vested interests, media moguls & massive corporations. Feeling rather foolish in hindsight

here's one person working hard to un-normalise the 2party system: 👏

Did anyone actually do the math?
The only 2party coalition is CXU and the party which is, at the very least, partially lead by Nazis.
We’ve got the first post-end-of-coalition polls from Germany. This is what the parliament would look like if elections were tomorrow (currently planned for March).
Possible 2-party coalitions: CDU-SPD or CDU -Green (with small majority, so not certain)

QD - thanks for posting - might AUKUS be the most egregious debacle that the 2party/duopoly has fosited on Australia? The insanity of trying to appease Murdoch is 🤯

Bc the electorate for far right parties is ~20-30%, far right parties can win sizable minorities in multiparty systems, becoming important in coalitions. In 2party systems, the far right has to capture the whole of the right party. I’m not sure why you find this controversial, but happy to learn.

Rustadons are not for turning.

Time for them to face facts - 2party duopoly system is a huge con.

they honestly don’t believe/understand the dichotomous nature of a 2party system. they would rather be hoisted by their own petard than vote for dems. in short, they’re ideologues and extremely difficult to inform (the tell is how they argue).

Yup....and that's what you get with a 2party system....we need to keep Canada from turning into the shitshow that is the states.

i sincerely hope the 2party system you guys have is reestructured within our lifetime

WHY THE 2PARTY SYSTEM MUST BE ABOLISHED
August 20, 2025 at 12:05 AM
We are ushering in the New American Fascism.
That's what having both sides of a 2party system acquiescing to the demands of their corporate overlords to the detriment of our American citizens ensures.

Our false idol is money.

analogous to people screaming at PA Dems for Fetterman: many of us did not vote for him in the primary but of course we worked to get him elected in the general because the alternative was Dr. Oz! and yes, we are protesting, pressuring him, & will primary him. this is how 2party politics works

Solid point about scattered non-2party vote. This is why advance Australia runs spoiler “independents” #insiders

Super article - lot to unpack.
2party democracy = duopoly, no? & elections are just personality contests. My take Australia - still a duopoly until there's minority
'In a two party democracy, responsibility of both of the overpowered political entities to act within reasonable confines of country.'

Great thread showing the influence on the viable coalitions by which of the small parties enter the Bundestag.

For me one of the prime questions to watch on Sunday, as the capactiy to act of the next German government will differ wildly on whether a 2party coalition will be possible.
What will make-or-break Friedrich Merz’ coalition options? The number of parties in the next Bundestag!

Which of the three small parties in the opinion polls
– Left Party 6-7%
– BSW 4-4.5%
– FDP 4%
will pass the 5% threshold?

A few scenarios to illustrate how the 630 seats could be distributed 👇

Not going to happen tho .. the numbers aren’t there .. if all NDPers vote Carney .. majority and cons will have no power .. this election is literally a 2party vote unfortunately
