I did this figure last year and shared some pics, but I've recently seriously upped my photography game. So, here are some shots that really do it justice. 75mm figure of a curiassier in Swedish service, c. 1630. #histscalemodels #30yearswar

Bit of culture... stopped for a quick butchers at Rocroi, where the ramparts are very much still intact. #30yearswar #belgianbeerweekender

We are pleased to learn that one of our Honorary Research Fellows at IMH is now on Bluesky. Dr Kathrin Zickermann ( @kzickermann.bsky.social ) is an expert on Swedish territories in the Holy Roman Empire (Bremen Stift, Verden & Pomerania.)

Give her a follow #Skystorians

Interesting that prominently mentioning "News from Tilly's Headquarters" was a selling point in Antwerp.

News printed in Antwerp 400 years ago: wars, rumours of wars, and non-existent peace talks.

Very cool!
Trying to work out the name... John Reesnitz?

this caught my eye: a poor stranger from Magdeburg is seeking relief from the Skinners in 1634 because of 'the overthrow & destruccion of that towne'. They gave him £10, which seems generous.

Finally, the Battle of #Lemgo article is published (1638). It would never have made it to print without the excellent input of my co-author, Dr Kathrin Zickermann from UHI Centre for History

A good opportunity to think through genres of contemporary writing about the #30yearswar. I haven't heard of Latomi, but the pamphlet literature is filled with "recent histories" which seem to be distinct from the newspapers @vor400.bsky.social has been working from.

400 yrs ago yesterday (SV) or nine days from now (SN): Lutter-am-Barenberge, which was definitely NOT the end of C4's war against the emperor.
Also Marquard Pentz was KIA there. Never forget.

The Battle of #Lemgo ( #VlothoBridge ) took place on this day, 17 October 1638:

The battle has been misunderstood for generations. Kathrin Zickermann and I explain why here:

Brushing up on the importance of "the #empirical method" for the new history student intake. First, they read their favourite book on the #30YearsWar (any one that discusses the Battle of Lemgo, 1638). Then get them to read this:
