Finally got to try this out at Playtest Zero, and boy yeah does the juice not match the squeeze, but it did cause a player to pause and not try their best (because rolling 3d6 becomes worse than rolling 2d6) and that's just really funny and fitting. Ah well. That's Game Design.
I'm pretty sure it would suck, but I'm so curious to try a version of this die roll mechanic where instead of rolling the dice pool and you taking the two highest values for your result, you take the highest and lowest instead.
Made a nice update to the summary sheet and play materials for Get In The Dungeon, Losers! in preparation for playtesting at PAX Aus this weekend. This is my adventuregame of lousy dungeon delvers working for horrible Archmage bosses a la Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser or your creatures in MtG.

Yup. I'm playing an Echo Knight 3/Swashbuckler X in a Drakkenheim campaign and we're 80 sessions in, last boss fight, 14 levels and I've felt underpowered in combat the whole time. My DM gave me a 3d6 weapon and it's still rough

I knew someone who had one once, but it was a bit of a novelty (and not especially practical, because the faces were so small it didn’t easily stop rolling)

Rolling stats in earlier editions of D&D was usually 3d6 or similar (4d6 and keep the high 3, etc)

"Sword of the Centurion is a +2 magical short sword (Gladius). Target creature hit with this sword by a natural 20 roll must make a Constitution saving throw, DC 14, or lose a limb. On a successful save target still receives 3d6 additional slashing damage, and 2d8 fire damage."

this thought experiment is worth engaging with but only if you are willing to take like 3d6 psychic damage immediately
I'm gonna try something a bit heavy here, and I'll ask that you read with a bit of nuance (with the caveat that nuance is not inherently good or bad, some things should be nuanced, other things shouldn't be). I don't ask good faith, as I don't think that's a reasonable policy, but I do ask that you read the following few posts *carefully* especially if you disagree.

I love the 3D6 dice system. The fact that there are average numbers that come up more often makes it way more realistic than other dice systems. The only drawback is that you have to add the numbers together with every roll, which, unfortunately, is not a small problem. #dnd #ttrpg

Rogues in #Cerberus get Cunning Strike now. When Sneak Attack lands, the damage card offers Trip or Withdraw for one less die, with Trip's save DC on the button. That's where the choice belongs: you know it hit before you trade dice. Steady Aim gives real Advantage now too. #ttrpg #dnd5e

Whip of Ants
