Jensen Huang and Nvidia are also the last ones standing from a large field of video card companies in the 90s.

RIP Matrox, 3DFX, Diamond, S3, ATI et al
the thing about Jensen Huang is that he will never ever ever not fundamentally be a guy who runs a graphics card company. Like sure yeah whatever scientific computing AI ok ok he learned everything he needs to know selling VGA cards with badly photoshopped box art at E3 in 1996
Jensen is probably the most Jobs-like CEO left in the industry, in that he has a completely monomaniacal focus on producing and selling more GPUs no matter what. Things which are not relevant to that goal, such as knowing where you live, are discarded to fit more GPU sales ideas in his brain.

Clenching his teeth seeing a 3dfx ad like Salieri and Mozart

the year is 2026. nvidia is largest company in the world (?). in the other timeline, 3dfx acquired nvidia instead of the other way around, and 3dfx is the biggest company in the world. that timeline is known as the "voodooverse"

And another curiosity. The Verite V2100 PCI I've been playing with was really unstable in my 430TX machine (the one that's getting along well with the previously-thought-defective ViRGE/GX2), but it seems to work much better in the 440BX rig.

I decided to pop my 3DFX cards out of the 440BX […]

Edge has the chance of being the best games magazine by far. Seemingly written by adults & with claims that all they cared about was gameplay, yet every issue was just business wank chat & articles about how 3DFX cards or some other just around the corner tech would make games important

Shitrag
"Screen-based 2D games are a dead-end; there is simply no comparison to an immersive 3D experience."

The death of 2D games is on the horizon, predicts EDGE magazine in December 1993 - a common feeling at the time as FMV, texture-mapped polygonal 3D, and VR became the hot new tech.

yesss - I've loved racing games before and ever since but that one, with my 3DFX Graphics Card *chefs kiss*

a parallel dimension where 3DFX is worth a quadrillion dollars and NVIDIA is forgotten

I've not really listened to Huang talk before.

I chose "nVIDIA" over 3dfx in the late 90s, and I've used their hardware and only-game-in-town linux drivers ever since.

An interview doesn't change that of course, but if he's the guy for skeptical AI optimism, I think you need a new guy.

The thread turned into a detailed post-mortem on 3dfx. Commenters tied its collapse to flawed business bets—like acquiring board maker STB—and failing to anticipate 32-bit color and hardware T&L, while Nvidia executed on a disciplined, relentless release cycle. #tech 3/4

I’m not sure but 3dfx mulling releasing a 6 chip video card that had to plugged into mains power

3dfx trying to act like 24-bit color was just a passing fad didn't help things either

Depending on how far you go, you may not be able to play the game.

V-Rally 99 PC is one such game. No matter what wrapper or hex edit I do, nothing gets me past the 3DFX screen. Thats right the Voodoo cards that don't even exist anymore. The only other option I have to try is a VM with Win98

I had a 3dfx voodoo GPU in my first ever pc and it had ports in the back for a Sega Saturn pad so I could play virtua fighter and panzer dragoon
September 25, 2026 at 3:05 PM
It’s crazy that if history had gone very slightly differently, 3dfx would now be the biggest company in the world
September 25, 2026 at 3:03 PM
... à fait différente.
Bref, j'ai vu Colony. Qui a dit que le zombie s'essoufflait ? Mise en scène formidable (sans 3DFX de partout), encore des idées nouvelles pour le genre. J'ai beaucoup aimé.
Merci Pascal Quidault ;) (2/2)

Time to resurrect 3Dfx?

Oui, celui de mes parents mais 80% de l'utilisation c’était moi...

Le 1er que j’ai (en partie) payé c’etait 👇

Une tuerie, c’etait l’ordi des LANparty 🤩🤩🤩

Oh and then there was the two dreamcasts that SEGA developed. One was the Sega Black Belt, a us based dreamcast built with 3DFX graphics and off-the-shelf hardware. Midway used it in their arcade cabinets in the late 90s and early 2000s. Then the Katana, the dreamcast and the atomiswave.

Don’t even think a picture exists of the pc pro model.
I do remember getting a voodoo 3DFX graphics card for it.

I had a 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 GPU in my first PC solely because they had a screenshot of Halo on the box and I was looking forward to playing it on PC before MS bought them up for Xbox.

P3 covers you for DOS all the way up to WinXP, and ISA to PCI+AGP. You can shove in a 3DFX and Soundblaster. You can have RS232 serial and 25-pin printer ports, plus USB. Network from 10Mb to 1Gb. You'll not be able to use SATA, though, but it covers a whole lot of bases. Up to 1400MHz too.

Wow, i always forget that there was a PS2 sequel. I loved Drakan for PC, it came with my Voodoo 3DFX card. I still want to play the sequel.

I mean it works but the 3.3v regulator and gpu IC heatsink are getting too hot to touch so.. that can’t be normal. Voodoo 3 3000 3dfx
