Azzi Fudd, a Dallas Wings guard and 2026 No. 1 draft pick, made history by winning the WNBA 3-Point Contest during the 2026 All-Star weekend. She scored 30 of 40 possible points in the final round, showcasing her precision and composure under pressure. Fudd, who entered the All-Star break averaging 2.2 three-pointers per game, attributed her success to years of dedicated practice and rehabilitation from previous injuries. Her repetitive shooting during rehab helped refine her form and build the rhythm needed to excel in the contest. Fudd acknowledged her nerves during the event but emphasized her comfort with the set shot, calling it 'muscle memory.' Her victory marks a significant milestone for rookie players in the WNBA, highlighting her potential as a future star. The contest, part of the WNBA All-Star festivities in Chicago, also featured other events like the Shooting Stars competition, where Team Washington emerged victorious. Fudd's achievement underscores her rapid rise in the league and sets a new precedent for young athletes aiming to make an impact early in their careers.

The WNBA faces significant challenges as Caitlin Clark, its most popular player, declines participation in the 3-Point Contest during the All-Star Weekend. This decision, along with similar rejections from Sabrina Ionescu and others, undermines the league's efforts to boost viewership and engagement. ESPN, which heavily promotes the event, risks losing its audience due to the absence of Clark, a key draw for ratings. The contest features 'From the Logo' shots, a marketing campaign centered around Clark's long-range shooting prowess. Despite the lack of top-tier participants, the field includes skilled shooters like Marina Mabrey and Azzi Fudd. However, the league's inability to secure major names raises concerns about its ability to sustain momentum and attract casual fans. The situation highlights broader issues in the WNBA's strategy to grow its audience while navigating player preferences and scheduling constraints.
