"When you awoke me in this body," G'raha says into the silence. "I thought, everyone will see a twenty-four-year-old man. They won't see the crystal that climbed my flesh like vines; the century I've lived in another world; the prices I've paid; the prayers I've whispered and had to answer by my own hand. They won't see the years I've lived, nor the scars and magics that carved my body like marble being chipped away at my very being."

He speaks in a rush, eyes closed. He's aware of Aedric laying his fingers atop his right arm, as if feeling the crystal that once was there. As if acknowledging what others will not see.

I've actually written a fic about this exact moment!

G'raha goes to check up on his WoL, who is crying alone, and draws parallels between their experiences. Here are the first few pages but you can read more at the link here if you like:

G'raha Tia stands outside one of the buildings of Camp Broken Glass, hesitating to knock on the great metal door that separates them. It is an aptly named locale, for all he feels much the same: shattered and raw and fragile. Anyone would, he tells himself, after that ordeal.

He knows the perils of the Warrior of Light are great. He knows the risks Aedric puts himself in every time he goes into battle.

But this?

"Ah, and you must be the lover."

Words not Aedric's own spoken from betwixt the Warrior of Light's lips - drawled and heavy, almost accusatory - as dripping poison. How Zenos knew of their relationship was beyond him.

Then, that scream ripped raw from a foreign throat as a shambling mass of black armor crested over a snowdrift:

"Get away from them, you bastard!"

It was not Aedric's voice coming from some unfortunate Garlean soldier's walking corpse, yet he'd know that inflection anywhere. Know that protective, wonderful, intense soul the moment he felt his presence draw near.

After it all, he was quiet. Alisaie and Alphinaud peppered Aedric with questions, and his Warrior had waved a reassuring hand. Yet G'raha saw the look on his face: pale, haunted. Scared. He'd said he needed a moment to compose himself. Needed some time alone before they stormed the Tower of Babil.

Was it wrong, then, that G'raha wanted to be with him when he'd asked for space? Was it wrong that, now, he waits like a lovesick fool outside that door?

His fist - poised in the air - still hesitates on knocking. He's not sure if Aedric needs space, or comfort, or healing, or-

"We need to move out soon." Thancred's voice rounds the corner, interrupting the dark deluge plaguing his mind. Boots crunch in the Garlean snow behind him. G'raha does not look up, but he knows the hyur is standing less than a fulm away. "How is he?"

"I…" G'raha forces the words out from where they're stuck in his throat. If anyone could sympathize with Aedric's recent ordeal, it's Thancred; G'raha doesn't want to think about what it must have been like to have an unsundered Ascian in one's body while your own soul

remained crowded into a corner of wavering consciousness. "I was about to check." A gust of wind makes him clutch his coat tighter around his chest.

Thancred is silent for a while before he says, "Let me know if you need anything. If he needs anything." His voice barely wavers, but G'raha notices the slight tremor in the gunbreaker's words.

"I shall not hesitate to do so."

The sound of footsteps retreating. G'raha is still looking down at the snow under his feet. He knows they're all worried. The Scions seem to have a silent understanding that he should be the one to talk to the Warrior of Light first; it's his duty as his boyfriend - his partner in this and all things. A role he would not trade for anything else.

He knocks.

Silence.

He knocks again, the metal rapping against his cold, chapped knuckles.

"I don't need healing," says the voice from the other side of the door. "I-I'll be just a moment."

G'raha frowns. He hears the hitch in his partner's voice. Hears the way it shakes.

"It's me," G'raha says.

"It's unlocked." Immediate.

His frigid fingers fumble with the door. He retreats in from the cold, quickly shutting the door once more. His ears flick, shaking off the snowflakes that had landed in his fur. It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dark room; tattered curtains are half-pulled over the windows in this small outbuilding. Aedric didn't light any lamps, it seems.

He sees the elezen's tall form bent over in the corner over a metal washbasin. His first impression is of Aedric's dark hair, unbraided and in chaotic disarray, as it hangs over his face. It looks as if he's run his hands through it multiple times. The ends are wet, as if he's tried to splash water on himself.

The second thing G'raha notices is that he's stripped off his coat and shirt. The medium-tan skin of the elezen's back is bare and lightly freckled. As he gets closer, he sees it's pebbled with gooseflesh; from fear or from the cold, G'raha isn't sure. He feels his face heat slightly; it's rare to have such a glimpse of his partner's uncovered flesh, as of late. Yet he reigns in his reaction as he says:

"You should put your sweater and coat back on. You'll catch your death out here."
