Two things are true:

1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown
2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields

I'm a software developer by trade. I'm going to attempt to explain what this revolution feels like "from the inside".

All commercial software exists to solve a problem of its users; to "do the thing", whatever it is. If the software does the thing, it works, and that's the end of it.

For the software developers still here, when an LLM does something you dislike, odds are that it's an optimization problem, and as a software developer, you are quite good at solving those.

As a software engineer, this gets my vote
Universal Time
Get rid of the AM/PM horseshit and go to a standard 24hr clock. Everyone knows when morning is. It's when the sun comes up. It doesn't really matter if that is 0500 or 1500.

we already have malleable software, software you can beat into shape with a hammer. what's missing is soft software, repairable software, I can put my hands into the pool of plasma and squishy squishy software, wirey bits and pieces chunks and lumps and parts of things and scissor snip and sellotape

Someone on here told me that more jobs are like software development than the people doing those jobs appreciates. And I wonder anew who are these people and have they ever left the house

My job title, is Agent Orchestration Engineer.

My job, is to solve problems.

If I started running around gastowning, I would get dropped.

A lot of people seem to think the "Software" part of "Software Engineer" is the important one, and not the Engineer part, with Software as only the method used
"my code is handcrafted and artisanal"

running face first into

"yeah what I really was hiring you for was *list of business outcomes*"
