The distinctive rear looks of the C30 paid tribute to two classic Volvos of the past. The glass hatch was an innovative feature of the early '70s 1800ES, later making a comeback on the 480ES in the late '80s, before being revived for the C30.
The rear styling of the car - which shared the platform of the 440/460 - evoked the 1800ES of the early '70s thanks to its frameless rear hatch. The link was reflected in the 480ES name of the initial model. The 480S shown in this spread joined the range in 1992, and had more basic trim.

Went to get my winter shoes from the supermarket pick-up point and spotted this 480ES. The owner said he had fixed a bunch of issues caused from lack of use by the previous owners, and that it runs great now. I’ve wanted one of these since 1987.

480ES had a similar rear window though much less pretty than the 1800.
