There's some stuff to be done on lot sizes that could help a good bit, such as MA Question 7 on the ballot this week which would require cities and towns to allow SFHs on 5000sqft lots. Some currently require a half acre (21,780sqft).

This is all downstream of rich local business moguls in the exurbs thinking of themselves as just working class little people who drive $100,000 pickups, live in 5000sqft houses built on old farmland, and own timeshares in Branson and the Gulf Coast.

love that one of my secret larp talents got to come out with this character: I can yell loud enough to be heard clearly across 5000sqft and three floors of house without ruining my whole voice

If there was a zombie apocalypse, my kids college would be ideal. Self-contained campus, first two floors are parking garages with ramps. Third floor has at least 5000sqft of open space to grow crops. Easily defended, great base of operations and survival.
Yeah, I’m a little high. So what?

5000sqft still seems pretty big (writing this from a ~2500sqft lot)

We get this here in Canada as well. The main issue is the retail floor templates are massive - minimum 4000-5000sqft or larger which excludes many local, independent businesses. Retail landlords all want a handful of established, big chains rather than a mix of smaller shops/restaurants.

"Cottage"

When I say "cottage" what do you think?
I keep getting requests for people's cottages. They end up being 5000sqft houses.
That's your second home, sir.
