Grow your own oak tree #19

The acorn is now in the vase, & the taproot is rapidly extending in length as it seeks moisture & depth

The depth is to anchor the seed in what appears to be very soft soil. At this stage it just needs moisture & energy from the seed

This is a usual news topic for us- grass growth and soil moisture.

Grass growth continues to be above normal with soil temperatures well above normal, 3.4c above normal in Carlow. Soil is wet too with soil moisture deficits near 0mm.

A natural warming cycle called El Niño is sizzling Pacific Ocean waters, leaking moisture into the air that can fuel passing storms. Such El Niño events can happen irregularly every couple of years, but scientists say the latest iteration is particularly extreme. https://to.pbs.org/4sAgHny

This record-breaking moisture is neither a surprise nor unpredicted: It is largely due to exceptional and record-shattering marine heatwave along the Baja California coast (i.e., the moisture source region). That, in turn, has links to both extreme El Niño event & climate change.

The calculated soil moisture anomaly indicates much drier than normal soil in much of the Eastern U.S. and Pacific Northwest. The soil is much wetter than normal in the Southwest, eastern Nebraska, Iowa and Florida.

The reason: Super El Nino’s Amplified Subtropical jet stream on top of a warmer Gulf/ warmer atmosphere. This allows for excess moisture, higher rain rates, and bigger floods.

Straw mulch is an all-season garden hero! In spring, it warms soil and suppresses weeds. Come summer, it locks in vital moisture and cools roots. In autumn and winter, it insulates against hard frosts before breaking down into rich, organic humus. A must-have natural layer for thriving beds! 🌾🌱
