For almost 80 years, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been the nation's immune system, detecting threats early, coordinating rapid responses, and safeguarding population health. Its deep bench of epidemiologists, laboratory expertise, support for health departments, and evidence-based recommendations have fought threats to the public's health. During 2025 that immune system has been compromised, prompting our resignations, following the firing of the US Senate-confirmed CDC Director Susan Monarez on Aug 27, 2025.1Since the start of the new US administration in January, 2025, reductions in staff and programmes, abrupt lay-offs, drastic funding cuts, and a disregard for scientific processes have compromised the agency. Each of these stressors weakens the CDC's ability to protect the nation and the world, eroding immunity to future infectious and non-infectious crises. Without immediate intervention, the prognosis is dire: a debilitated CDC unable to protect the health of the American people. Under the guise of “disruptive innovation”, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has offered a poorly characterised plan for a new Administration for a Healthy America (AHA) that focuses on chronic diseases and with a CDC that is downsized and restricted to infectious diseases only.2 What is being promoted as reform is, in reality, a misdiagnosis. The supposed cure is attacking the vital organs of the nation's public health infrastructure: chronic disease prevention, environmental health, and data science. The result is a cascade of systemic failure that threatens to damage not only the CDC but also US public health. His article in the Lancet (Britain's most prestigious medical journal) in June 1942 was revelatory.

#AMR is a risk to antibiotic failure & death, but if this happens, do we record it on death certificates? Our centre data = NO!

👉In 1 year, 4% of deaths were AMR-attributed & NONE were recorded on death certificates!👈
