#70CE
this is the story of basically every Jewish person you know or have ever heard of. it's been fleeing genocide since the Romans sacked Jerusalem in 70CE.
Escaping the Holocaust in Austria on one side.

Escaping anti-Jewish pogroms in the Ukraine pale of settlement on the other.

It’s fleeing genocide all the way down.
Genuinely curious: If your family is American, what brought them here?
Mine: religious nuttery & primogeniture

This. Before the Temples fell the core features were getting rid of leaven, eating matzah and the Passover sacrifice. The Seder was a post-70CE innovation.

The middle east, famously war free from 70CE to 1948CE. Absolutely no conquest or crusades happened in that time apparently.

Rabbinic Judaism isn’t the Judaism of the temple because the temple was razed by the Romans in 70CE.

Stronghold of the Durotriges, the magnificent Cadbury Castle in east Somerset. Cleared out by the Romans in about 70CE then re fortified in 500CE. Linked by Leland to the legendary Camelot. Whatever, the views are spectacular

We ended up putting everything after 70CE on the Roman's tab, which works out nicely

Tacitus was born decades after Jesus' alleged life in 56ce.

Tacitus is simply the first extra-biblical writer to see Christians and assume in his description there must have therefore been a christ.

Tacitus taking a myth at face value in 70ce does not actually mean the myth is fact.

The period after the destruction of the Temple in 70CE was followed by The Diaspora--there were Jews throughout the Roman Empire, but now they spread in exile across europe, w. asia, n. africa, mideast. Different communities developed different customs but shared basic religious texts and rituals.

Damn if we're going with that spurious logic then Israel itself shouldn't exist since the Kingdom of Israel was dissolved in 720bce and the Second Temple destroyed in 70ce

Post 70CE, the rabbis huddled up to draft Judaism 2.0, which reimagined our identity outside temple-centric worship. Because Judaism is centered on home/community, we can take it anywhere.

We don't *need* a nation-state to do Judaism or be Jews. That was the whole point

The Temple was literally razed by the Romans in 70CE in response to the Jewish Revolts. Without the Temple there were only 2 options: 1) Change how Judaism operates or 2) cease existing. Jews of the time chose to keep going.

On Tisha B'Av, Jews commemorate the destruction of the Temple in 70CE. Today, May 15th Palestinians mourn the Nakba, the expulsion of 1-million indigenous Palestinians from their homes in Israel-Palestine.

Pharisees are the forefathers of modern rabbinic Judaism and were key in the continued survival of Judaism after the Temple was razed in 70CE.

This feels more logical but since the fashion for 'late antique' everything has another decade or so in it, til then:
pre- late antiquity (3500 BCE-333 BCE)
early late antiquity (334BCE-70CE)
late antiquity (71-700 CE).
late late antiquity (701-1500).
everything 1501 and after is just post-late.

First, let's be clear on our terminology:

By "Land of Israel," I mean the geographical footprint of the biblical area known as Israel, where the Israelites settled and lived until the year 70CE when the Romans came.

This land overlaps with, but is not an exact match for the State of Israel.
