Fortunately, the good people at the Conservative and Unionist Party have brought a motion on Lothianburn Junction to this week's Transport & Environment Committee, so @chasbooth.bsky.social and I will have an opportunity to amend in requests for consideration of cycle safety.
Tory motion to Transport & Environment Committee of 10/09/26: Lothianburn Junction Traffic Trial – A702/A720 Supporting Information: 1.1 Notes that Transport Scotland (and its operating company BEAR Scotland) has implemented trial measures at Lothianburn Junction to improve traffic flows on the A702 and A720 Edinburgh City Bypass. 1.2 Notes that these measures respond to community concerns about increased traffic congestion on the A702 following the introduction of traffic signals at the Hillend/Damhead junction. 1.3 Recognises the adverse impact this traffic congestion has had on critical bus services, including Lothian Buses routes 15 and 4, and the 101 service which operates as far as Dumfries. 1.4 Further notes that this trial represents the first significant change to traffic arrangements at Lothianburn Junction since the relevant sections of the Edinburgh City Bypass were constructed in the 1980s, and that the junction remains a major and busy interchange on Scotland's strategic road network. Proposed Action/Decision: 2.1 Thanks Transport Scotland and BEAR Scotland for implementing the current trial measures at Lothianburn Junction. 2.2 Requests that Council officers keep Committee members informed of progress with the trial, including through regular Business Bulletin updates and any other means they consider appropriate. If built, these roads will aggravate the issues they are supposed to alleviate. The proposed scheme particularly fails to meet the “Takes climate action” and “Improves our health and wellbeing” Priorities identified in the National Transport Strategy,1 and also runs counter to the national policy to reduce car use as part of the commitment to achieving net zero by 2045.2 Whilst there are some notable improvements for cyclists included in the latest plans, the scheme as a whole will create a more dangerous environment for cycling in Midlothian and south Edinburgh. It will also further entrench the dominance of car use in Midlothian, making it even more difficult for future generations to switch to using sustainable modes of transport. The time, money and other resources being allocated to this project should instead be spent on projects which will actually help solve these problems, such as improving the public and active travel networks in Midlothian. Below we list general and specific comments on the proposals.

Friend signed up for parkrun for his first on Saturday in Dunfermline. Visiting around another 25 Scottish football grounds tomorrow. Today has been long but worth it. The A702 is incredible to drive.
