Confirmed!

Not only is AASUA pursuing a strike vote, they are also urging their membership to vote for a strike!

For a government elected on creating stability for Albertans, it seems Smith has only created more instability and uncertainty.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m celebrating by supporting my union in their fight against the Alberta UCP interference in the collective bargaining process between our union and our employer.

The Employer is trying to gut our benefit plan. We can't let them.

Union bargaining at the U of Alberta-interesting piece of information in the latest @thegateway.bsky.social by @lilypolenchuk.bsky.social

The university sent AASUA a letter suggesting their ask for increased compensation is "unlawful" with reference to provincial government funding

About half of undergrad classes are taught by Academic Teaching Staff (ATS).

Many of these instructors are grad students who are also paying tuition and being forced to engage in precarious labour.

Big part of the AASUA negotiations this round is ending this two-tier precarious work.
I am shocked that contract negotiations between the UofA academic staff association and the Board of Governors appointed by Marlaina Smith who, this evening, was appearing at an event alongside a far-right Nazi to raise funds for a private fascist "university" in the USA, have broken down.

Shocked.

Aren’t these 2 different things? The AASUA is the union for UofA teaching staff. Elementary and Secondary school teachers are represented by the ATA.

Here is more information about the university's exploitive labour practices.

I don't know as I am not a part of AASUA, but if negotiations have broken down, my assumption is it likely has a lot to do with the short-term contracts.

University is also in a hiring freeze.
Who are precarious staff at the University of Alberta?
AASUA is working with our precarious members to share their experiences, and the impact of precarity on teaching and learning at the U of A.
