How new “bottom-up” mapping methods using satellite data and AI are filling population data gaps, making invisible communities visible for better planning and policy.

AI can accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, from improving healthcare and education to streamlining resource efficiency. Harnessing the benefits of AI while mitigating the risks is one of the defining development challenges of our time. On 7-8 October, UNDP Belarus co-hosted the AI4Development Forum in Minsk, convening over 350 participants from government, business, academia, as well as international experts. As a result, an analytical report will be released, featuring policy recommendations for the national AI ecosystem. These insights will help integrate AI-innovations into national strategies and pilot solutions in key economic sectors. From wildfire smoke in Canada to urban smog in South Africa, air pollution is a global threat and one of today’s most pressing health challenges. In South Africa, monitoring air quality has long been costly and out of reach for many communities. Through the AI_r project, researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed an affordable, AI-powered system that makes air quality data accessible to everyone. With support from IDRC, FCDO, and partners through the@ai4development (AI4D) and AI for Global Health (AI4GH) initiatives, the project is preparing to deploy 500 low-cost air monitors, the largest network of its kind in Africa.
