#AIFringe
Delighted to open #AIFringe at @britishlibrary.bsky.social this morning, in parallel with #AIActionSummit in #Paris.

It's a historic moment and the first time that so many countries, tech companies and experts from all over the world engage on the potential of this transformative technology.

Such a joy to speak again with @rajiinio.bsky.social @ UK’s AIFringe Summit today. She’s now on @ruchowdh.bsky.social ‘s panel, telling an *amazing* story from 2016 about overconfidence in ImageNet benchmarks. So relevant today - we need more people with institutional memory in AI ethics/safety.

I spent most of yesterday at the #aifringe and have spent a lot of time in similar spaces of late.

I am struck by how calm and polite everyone is. I am finding the pace of technology change, policy development, education, trust and safety, opportunities and fears a bit too bracing to be calm.

Loved hearing Abeba Birhane speak at the AI & Society Forum keynote yesterday! One of the most interesting nuggets of knowledge she gave was that scaling up is the newest fad. This is dangerous because as datasets get bigger so do their problems as she’s investigated in her own research! #aifringe

From convening a panel at the AI Fringe, to giving artists a voice in Westminster, February was a busy month advocating for artists' rights.

“In my fantasy world, AI frees us to value, and economically value, those activities best done by humans: caring, being creative, using your imagination”. Thanks to @thangamdebbonaire.bsky.social for discussing how we can support creative futures in arts, culture and AI today at the #AIFringe

A few weeks ago, I chaired a panel convened by @dacs.org.uk at @britishlibrary.bsky.social for #AIFringe event discussing the wider challenges of #GenAI to creative work, and what responses should be, with excellent contributions from @thangamdebbonaire.bsky.social:

It’s our third #FuturePub of 2023 tomorrow, our second in London this year, and it’s part of the amazing #AIFringe taking place all week! In the meantime, if anyone needs me, I’ll be here, in the bath, with an original #Sachertorte, avoiding my adult responsibilities for at least an hour 🥰

I enjoyed this. But this was more about AI in general and not really about storytelling and the impact on storytelling of AI. This is a common problem. We don't stick to the business in hand. STORYTELLING. (Or writing as we used to call it) #ai_storytelling #aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 8:14 PM
Good question from fishbowl visitor. When did you start get interested in AI. They mainly get quite fancy about their answers rather than thinking personally #ai_storytelling aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 8:09 PM
i'm none the wiser about how to proceed as a writer interested in telling stories using ai... :( #ai_storytelling #aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 8:03 PM
Yasmin again - so good - talking about how we have to accept we have shifting and context sensitive opinions - so it'snot good AI to fix you as 'what you're like'. she's also talking about mechanical turk services where people get paid badly to identify images with text. #ai_storytelling #aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 8:01 PM
Mick: does anyone think there should be a UK censor for AI content?! Everyone should put be their own values in AI. Inequality isn't to be solved by AI. #ai_storytelling #aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 7:52 PM
Maria - you just need to be very clear about what you're afraid of in terms of in terms of exclusion, prejudice etc. (always thus in tech storytelling) #ai_storytelling #aifringe
November 2, 2023 at 7:48 PM
Ah man I am liking Yasmine so much. she actually wants everyone to go under the radar who are treated like they're they're under the radar. So AI recognises inequality (i hope im representing that right - but it's a fab idea) #ai_storytelling #aifringe
