«Neurodivergence and Sex Work» Masking: the hidden cost and the role it can play. [logo: The Alex Project.] For many neurodivergent sex workers, masking doesn't Kurt happen at work—it can happen all day, every day. At work, masking may help you stay safe, meet client expectations, and navigate social interactions. But doing it constantly can come at a cost. ‣ What is Neurodivergent Masking? Neurodivergent marking is consciously or unconsciously hiding or changing natural traits to appear more “neurotypical”. It might look like forcing eye contact, rehearsing conversations, copying social clues, hiding stimming, suppressing sensory discomfort, performing emotions you don't really feel, or others. Many people learn to mask as a way to stay safe or avoid judgement. ‣ Why Might Neurodivergent Sex Workers Mask? Masking might help you build rapport with clients, navigate unpredictable social situations, meet expectations of emotional labour, reduce the forms of stigma or discrimination you might face, feel more prepared for bookings, separate your work persona from your authentic self… Masking can be a valuable survival strategy—but it requires energy. ‣ The Hidden Cost. Constant masking can contribute to neurodivergent burnout, emotional exhaustion, feeling disconnected from yourself, increased anxiety, sensory overwhelm around work, difficulty recognising your own needs, and more. The more you mask, the harder it can become to notice when you're reaching your limit. ‣ When Masking Becomes Overwhelming. You might notice feeling like you're acting everyday (not just at work), needing long periods of recovery after shifts (more than usual for you), feeling like you are loosing track of who you are behind the mask, increased shutdowns or meltdowns,feeling guilty or ashamed for needing more rest than others… These could be signs your nervous system may be working overtime. ‣ Supporting Yourself. You don't have to unmask everywhere to benefit from unmasking somewhere. Consider creating spaces where you can stim freely, reduce sensory demands, spend time with people you don't have to perform for (or schedule alone time), rest before you're completely exhausted, honor your communication and regulation needs… Small opportunities to unmask can make a meaningful difference. ‣ Remember… Neurodivergent masking isn't a weakness. For many people, it's a strategy developed to stay safe, avoid stigma, and navigate environments that weren't built with us in mind. In sex work, masking can also help you manage clients and protect yourself. «Class and Financial Privilege in the Sex Industry» 7 reasons why it's easier to make money when you've got money, in sex work… [logo: The ALEX Project.] ‣ 1. Class and Financial Privileges Intersect With Other Inequalities. Financial privilege is also often connected to race, disability, gender identity, body size, immigration status, housing insecurity, mental health, family wealth or support… Some sex workers with lower incomes face greater risks, for example the higher chances of being criminalised or arrested (more on that later). That's due to structural inequality — not coincidence. ‣ 2. Getting Started Can Cost Money. People outside our industry sometimes say that sex work is “easy money”. But entering the industry often requires a safe place to work; a decent phone and internet; makeup, outfits, nails, hair; transport and hotel costs; time to build content; childcare; emergency savings; safer sex supplies and access to regular testing… Not everyone enters the industry with the same resources. ‣ 3. Criminalisation and Class. Class privilege affects who gets criminalised in the sex industry, and who is protected. In the UK, street-based sex work (“soliciting”) is criminalised, while and escort being paid for sex indoors, such as in a hotel, is not. This means workers with more money, privacy, housing stability, and access to safer indoor spaces are often less exposed to policing. Race, immigration status, gender identity, poverty, and housing insecurity also impact who is more likely to be stopped or profiled by police, arrested or surveilled, reported by landlords or neighbours, or treated more harshly in the justice system. Criminalisation does not affect all sex workers equally. The risks are shaped by class, race, and other systemic inequalities. ‣ 4. Money Can Improve Safety. Having financial stability means you are more able to: • Turn down clients showing red flags, or blacklist clients you know to be unsafe. • Take time off when burned out. • Access therapy and other things that can impact your wellbeing. • Access healthcare quicker when needed. • Afford a healthy lifestyle or diet. • Afford more in depth screening tools. • Work fewer hours. • Feel more confident that police may help you if you report something. • Invest in privacy and security. • Access legal advice or help if needed. Class privilege creates options. Options improve safety. ‣ 5. Education and Class-Signalling. Class privilege isn't just about money — it's also about social conditioning. Things like accent, private school education, university background, the way you speak, write or advertise, cultural references and confidence… … can all affect which clients are drawn to you, how “high-end” people perceive you to be, what rates you feel able to charge, which spaces you feel comfortable entering, how confidently you negotiate boundaries and money… Class is often perceived through presentation and communication — not just appearance. This happens in the sex industry, too. ‣ Online Success is Shaped by Privilege, too. Success online isn't just about effort or talent. Platforms often reward people who have time to post consistently, fast internet and newer devices, marketing knowledge, money for promotion, existing social connections, access to trend-driven aesthetics, meeting certain beauty standards… (Standards often influences by Eurocentric ideals, in turn based in racism and misogyny.) Algorithms are shaped by class and visibility. ‣ 7. High Earnings Often Require Upfront Investment. Workers who earn a lot are often expected to look “effortless”. But maintaining that image can involve cosmetic work, gym memberships, expensive lingerie and clothing, good cameras and lighting, expensive apartments or hotels, professional photography or footage, skincare, hair and nail appointments, accountant fees, regular travel in expensive cities… How much a sex worker earns, or how much they are struggling financially, is not a reflection of how ‘good’ they are at their job. It is often a reflection of unequal starting points, systemic inequalities, discrimination, algorithmic bias, unstable housing, lack of financial safety nets, stigma… … and, quite simply, the reality that some workers have far more access to money, safety, education, connections, and opportunities than others.

Sex workers have shaped culture, fashion, language, nightlife, beauty standards, music, dance, and aesthetics for decades. But many profit from, imitate, or celebrate sex worker culture while ignoring the people behind it. Supporting sex workers means more than consuming what we create. ‣ What Can ‘Stealing From Our Culture’ Look Like? • Adopting sex worker aesthetics while shaming actual sex workers. • Profiting from styles, slang, dances, or trends created by sex workers without credit. • Treating stripping, camming, or escorting as easy, a costume, or the butt of a joke. • Glamourising “the aesthetic” while ignoring violence, criminalisation, and stigma. • Supporting media that exploits sex workers while refusing to listen to real lived experiences. • Distancing yourself from sex workers with “I'm not like THEM” rhetoric. You cannot separate the culture from the people who created it. ‣ Ignoring What Sex Workers Have Contributed To Culture. Sex workers have influenced mainstream culture for generations — specially black trans women, strippers, escorts, dominatrixes, and survival sex workers. One example? Pole dance. Pole dancing as we know it exists because of strippers. Yet social media is full of #-NotAStripper content used to distance dancers from the workers who created and sustained the art form. You can respect pole as fitness AND acknowledge its roots in strip club culture. Erasing strippers and other sex workers while benefiting from their labour and innovation is still stigma. Credit matters. ‣ Copying Our Aesthetics And Fashion. Fashion, beauty, music videos, film, and luxury brands constantly recycle sex workers aesthetics such as platform heels, lingerie as outerwear, latex and leather, club makeup, “baddie” aesthetics, fishnets, corsets, bodycon silhouettes, or strip-club inspired visuals in music and TV. People praise the look on celebrities, influencers, and runways — while real sex workers are still judged, criminalised against, deplatformed, criminalised, and denies safety. If you love the aesthetic, support the people it came from. ‣ Perpetuating Stigma. People perpetuate sex worker stigma when they mock sex workers while copying up; consume our labour privately but disrespect us publicly; use "stripper", "hooker", or "escort" as insults; support censorship and deplatforming; stay silent when sex workers face violence, discrimination, or criminalisation; treat sex workers as disposable while benefiting from our culture; etc. ‣ Support looks like: Listening to sex workers, welcoming sex workers into your organisation, paying sex workers, crediting sex workers, protecting sex workers through advocating for full decriminalisation, or standing against stigma (even when it's inconvenient or feels uncomfortable). Sex workers culture is constantly consumed by the mainstream — while sex workers themselves are too often stigmatised, censored, exploited, and excluded. They love what we created, whilst refusing to support us as people. Credit us. Listen to us. «Joybait» ‣ Positive news for sex workers. Because even when the world is overwhelming, good things are happening too… — The Alex Project. ‣ Introducing Joybait. The news cycle can feel heavy at times. So much of what we see every day is crisis, conflict, and negativity. For sex workers — who already carry the emotional weight of stigma, safety concerns, and community care — that constant stream of difficult news can feel specially overwhelming. That's why we have made JOYBAIT. This series will highlight positive, uplifting stories and offerings from the sex worker community, as well as the wider world — moments of progress, solidarity, creativity, and joy. The ALEX Project was created by SWers, for SWers. For counselling, supplies, advocacy, support groups and more visit: www.AskForAlex.org.uk ‣ Sex worker community. Recently, Ash Regan attempted to pass a dangerous Nordic Model bill in Scotland. Scottish SWers worked tirelessly to draw attention to the risks this would bring, and the evidence that full decriminalisation of SW is the best option for the safety of workers. On 3 February 2026, MSPs voted on whether to approve its basic principle. It failed the vote, 64–54, so it fell and cannot progress further in that parliamentary session. Congratulations to Scotland for Decrim! Not paying a sex worker could not lead to rape charges in New South Wales, after a landmark case reshaped how consent is interpreted under the law. Harjeet Singh Saini was recently charged with multiple sexual offences and sentenced to six years in prison after not paying SWers for their services. Sex workers in a Nevada brothel are pushing to unionise for the first time in the US. Workers at a legal brothel in Pahrump have filed to form a union, arguing they want safer conditions, fairer pay, and more control over their image and online content. ‣ The ALEX Project and other SW Organisation… At the ALEX Project, we have a few reasons to feel joyful! • We have started a SWer film club in London (DM us for more info on these). • We raised money alongside Perfect Lives for The ALEX Project, and will be spending it on a wellbeing day for SWers where we can offer a variety of self-care and beauty treatments. • Our referrals for counselling are OPEN.¹ • We are currently accepting people for our next cohort of Wednesday Wiggles (a movement therapy group for SWers).¹ • Our in person drop-ins and online wellbeing and topics sessions continue! National Ugly Mugs are running a Racial Justice Project, fighting for fairness when it comes to those in the SWer community facing racial discrimination and barriers. THORN (Trans Hookers Resistance Network) organises mutual-aid and builds community. On top of research and activist work; they host monthly socials, film nights, and workshops on topics relevant to Trans SWers. They also hold sexual health drop-ins with free vaccines, test kits, digital PrEP, and condoms! DecrimNow have launched a new campaign called ‘Someone You Love is a Sex Worker’, providing guidance for allies of those within the community around how to advocate for our safety and for decriminalisation. Visit their SNS and their links to fill out their initial survey. [¹ Please note this is being uploaded over a month after it was originally published.] ‣ Wider world Joybait… Recently, the House of Lords voted to strengthen the abortion law reform passed by MPs last year. This was a vote in favour of decriminalising abortion, and they supported and amendment to pardon women who have been criminalised under archaic UK abortion laws. Indigenous groups and environmental campaigners in Brazil recently successfully stopped plans to privatise part of the Tapajós River in the Amazon. After around 1000 protesters occupied a major soy export terminal in Santarém to highlight the environmental and social risks, the Brazilian government cancelled a decree that would have allowed private companies to control navigation on several Amazon rivers. The victory protects local communities, Indigenous territories, and ecosystems from further industrial expansion. The Australian government has announced plans for a new Koala National Park, to combat their risk of extinction due to events like wildfires. «Sex Worker Pride» 14th September. Here are just some of the many things that we, as sex workers, can be proud of… [logo: The ALEX Project.] ‣ Our History and Activism. We have a long history of banding together in the face of discrimination, stigma, violence and censorship. LGBTQIA+ sex workers like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera have always been part of queer liberation movements — fighting for bodily autonomy, safety, dignity, and queer rights. SWer history will always be intertwined with the fight against transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, and racism- and SWers today continue to carry on the legacy of advocating for our rights and freedoms. ‣ Our Community Care. Sex workers have long supported each other through mutual aid, advocacy, education, and chosen family. Sex workers often care for and support each other when blood relatives, friendships, and systems fail to. At The ALEX Project, we have regular online and in-person meetups where you can find community, get peer support, access harm reduction resources and supplies. We can also refer you to a counsellor with lived experience of SW. ‣ Our Authenticity (or ability to navigate situations where authenticity may be unsafe). Existing outside the societal ‘norms’ and expectations takes courage. And so does surviving in spaces where you do not always feel safe enough to be fully open and seen. You can always reach out to us at The ALEX Project if you would like some support. ‣ Our Resilience. Surviving and thriving in systems that often try to erase, stigmatise, or silence us is powerful. Our strength is something to be proud of. ‣ Our Contributions to Culture. Sex workers have shaped culture in countless ways — through art, fashion, nightlife, activism, performance, language, music and community care. From mutual aid networks to our place in queer liberation movements. Sex workers have long been creators, trendsetters and cultural leaders. So much of what is celebrated in mainstream culture today was built by people who survived stigma and hardship while continuing to create, connect and care for one another. That legacy is something to be _so_ proud of. Our work, identity, joy, survival, and community matter. Many SWers are discriminated against, face violence, or experience isolation and loneliness related to what we do for work. But SWer Pride is a chance to celebrate the good- not just in our community, but in ourselves as individuals. You deserve to be celebrated, today and always. Pride isn't just about visibility — it's about survival, resistance, community, and celebration. The ALEX Project «Why Police ‘Welfare Checks’ Make Sex Workers Feel Unwell» Police claim that welfare checks in brothels are about “protecting vulnerable women”. But many SWers — especially migrants — know that the reality is very different. ‣ Official framing “Welfare visits” are presented as safeguarding operations. Police claim they aim to spot signs of trafficking or exploitation. They are often done under the banner of anti-slavery or crime prevention. ‣ What actually happens… Sex workers' experiences: Visits can involve raids, questioning, or forced closure of workspaces. Workers' phones, earnings, and IDS may be seized. Immigration checks are often carried out — leading to arrests or deportations of migrant SWers. What's called a “welfare check” actually becomes a criminal raid. ‣ Why we, as SWers, criticize these checks This is not safety — it is surveillance. This is not consent — it is control. Police often fail to recognize the difference between consensual sex work and trafficking. These operations can push sex work underground, making it more dangerous. Trust in police collapses, so workers are less likely to report real violence. ‣ Migrant workers and discrimination Many brothel workers are migrant women. They face racial profiling, language barriers, and immigration enforcement disguised as “welfare”. Bing undocumented can mean deportation instead of protection. The system often punishes the most marginalized, not traffickers. ‣ What we, as sex workers, want Decriminalisation of sex work — so workers can organize and report abuse safely. Community-led support, not police raids. Recognition of sex work as work, and a clear distinction from trafficking. Real welfare means listening to SWers, not policing us.
