New #tickborne #illness detected in China!

The Asian Longhorned Tick Nairovirus (ALTNV) causes mild flu-like illness on its own, but when co-infected with Dabie bandavirus, a deadlier #virus carried by the same #tick, #disease is worse than either virus on its own.

Scientists find new virus behind mysterious tick illness
Researchers led by the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity in Beijing have named the newly identified orthonairovirus Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV). The discovery, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, grew out of efforts to understand why about 30% of patients with symptoms suggestive of Dabie bandavirus (DBV) infection test negative for the tick-borne hemorrhagic fever. A Search for the Cause of Unexplained Tick Illness DBV causes severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), a potentially deadly disease found across Asia. The infection has a case-fatality rate of 10% to 30%. Thrombocytopenia refers to an abnormally low level of platelets, the blood cells involved in clotting. The World Health Organization has identified DBV as a priority pathogen for research. To investigate unexplained cases, researchers collected samples from people who had been bitten by ticks and were treated at sentinel hospitals in regions of China where tick-borne viruses are known to circulate. Using RNA sequencing and viral isolation, the team detected the previously unknown virus. "The cocirculation of ALTNV and DBV in the same areas, coupled with their shared tick vector, underscores the need for improved differential diagnosis between infections with these viruses in regions where SFTS is...

New Tick Virus Described in China Is Carried by a Species Already Established in 21 US States
Researchers in China have identified a previously unknown tick-borne virus that causes a flu-like illness, and the tick species that carries it most often is already established across a large part of the eastern United States. No human cases of the virus have been reported in this country. The virus, named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus or ALTNV, was described in the New England Journal of Medicine by a team led by researchers at the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity in Beijing, and reported by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. It was found at the highest rate in Haemaphysalis longicornis, the Asian longhorned tick, which the United States Department of Agriculture has confirmed in 21 states and Washington, D.C. The distinction that matters for American readers is between a vector and a virus. The tick is here. The virus, as far as anyone has tested, is not. Those are two separate facts, and collapsing them would misstate the risk. The Discovery Began with Patients Who Kept Testing Negative The research began with a puzzle rather than a search for something new. About 30 percent of patients in parts of China who...
