The Antarctic is also prime meteorite hunting: the ice makes fallen meteors easy to spot & tends to heave them into common areas.

A research group called the 'Antarctic Search for Meteorites', or ANSMET, coordinate annual expeditions.

No ANSMET team is there this season. NSF hasn't sent an ANSMET team in literally years because of budget cuts and reprioritization.

ANSMET: Antarctic Search for Meteorites Program has had their 2025-26 Field Season cancelled. The most productive search area by far has been cancelled. Result is a marked decline in meteorite and scientific discovery. Funding cuts to NSF astrobiology.com/2025/12/03/a...

25 years ago (12-18-00) I and 3 companions were flown by helicopter from our field camp at Meteorite Hills to Derrick Peak, a nearby exposed mountaintop where iron meteorites had been discovered decades earlier. We spent a few hours searching among the rubble. 1/

All in all, a nice excursion during our six weeks of meteorite hunting. Cannot believe it has been 25 years. L-R: William Oefelein (my tentmate and guy at center of astronaut love triangle), Sara Russell, me, Jeff Byrne

It was wonderful to be in the audience at #MetSoc2026 to hear Ralph Harvey give the Barringer Lecture on the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Search for Meteorites #ANSMET So many great memories of my 2 trips many moons ago.

Not potatoes. They are waiting for a large enough impact so they too can find their way to earth, land in Antarctica, be found by ANSMET and join the collection at NASA

Our team member, Stephanie Linde, is currently providing mapping support from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. She received a special shoutout by one of the team's we support - the Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET).

Great job, Stephanie!

We had reason to be in Montpelier OH this week who are proud to be the "Birthplace of Paul A. Siple, Polar Explorer." He is the namesake for Siple Dome, better known to ANSMET teams as "that's where our plane is going today instead of our field site."

@barbylon the previous (and only) time I visited an ANSMET slide show it featured some pretty terribly sexist "comedy" :(

Q. (J. R., BYU) ANSMET has not returned to Antarctica (only once) since COVID. ~$500-1M / year is really cost effective for sample return. [Agree.] I don't know what to do. A. Working in the meteorite steering group... setting up a cadence of ANSMET. Interagency transfer (IAA) has been an issue.

I don't want to make Feb 1 worse for you, but is it possible that Sunita Williams was at ANSMET that year and not Eileen Collins? Sorry!
