The first penguin eggs of the season have appeared near Ukraine’s Vernadsky station in Antarctica
The station’s doctor, Yelyzaveta Pidhaietska, spotted the first one on 2 November. Biologists have counted 14 so far, and expect several thousand.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: This guy is no longer the only North Carolinian to cast a ballot from Antarctica. According to state board of elections records, a woman from Pittsboro returned a ballot from the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station on October 23.
