Today I travelled around Iwate. I visited Ōshū - home of famous Emishi chief Aterui - who fought against Japanese incursions from the south in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. The city has a statue in his honour which draws from Jōmon pottery motifs.

If you go up into the hills outside of town, there is a cenotaph dedicated to Aterui and another Emishi chief called More, who lived around the same time. It’s deep in a forest, next to a shrine that looks almost abandoned.

Thinking about Emishi names after reading linguist Alex Vovin's work on Ainu elements in Old Japanese.
The "rui" ending of some names seems like it could be related to Ainu "ruy" for "strong".
Aterui = "a=teke(he) ruy", "You [will] have strong hands"?
Kearui = "kewe ruy", "strong body/physique"?

It's not super explicit so far - mostly the northern state which controls Hokkaido/Tohoku has a few characters with Emishi names (e.g Aterui) and a bunch of them have facial tattoos, though not really ainu ones.

初期宇宙の「リトル・レッド・ドット」。正体が分からないまま呼び名だけが付いていた天体を、国立天文台のスパコン「アテルイIII」のシミュレーションが、生まれて間もない巨大ブラックホールだと示した。名前が先にあって中身が後から来る、というのは天文ではよくある順番。

一面に広がる田んぼの中にポツンと物見やぐらが。３階まで登ると眼下には大谷翔平選手とデコピン君の雄姿！
毎年製作される田んぼアートは精密なデザイン設計の元、地元ボランティアの皆さんの協力の上で作り上げられています。
稲の他に古代米や雑穀などでカラフルな地上絵を表現。綺麗ですね。
物見やぐらの下には観光地お馴染みの顔出し看板がありますので記念写真にどうぞ！

one thing i really appreciate about Toumyu in particular is that I learn so much about Japanese history and culture through these myus. Michi no Oku taught me about Aterui and the Emishi, and now the sanki has taught me about ukiyo-e in the Edo period, it's just so cool to learn all this
