He published my grammar of Awjila Berber

Just saw the Awjila word aring/anirg which means 'neighbor' and which is also attested in Sokna 'arnag'.

It looks like tamajeq anarag (neighbor) , but the problem is that anarag comes from *anharag from the root HRG.
So did Awjila and sokna borrow this word from tamajeq ?

Today, exactly 10 years ago, I defended my PhD thesis! It was a grammar of Awjila Berber, based on previously published materials (primarily the texts and vocabular of Umberto Paradisi).

To celebrate this, let's have a look at what makes this dialect so unusual and cool! 🧵

Being a proper neo-grammarian the completely irregular outcome of *s yielding both Awjila s and š forced me to reconstruct a *s1 and *s2 for Proto-Berber.

But without further evidence this is clearly just a rhetorical trick. I didn't solve the problem, I just relabeled the problem.

Correspondance :

Meaning : Prayer

#Tamajeq : Amud

#Tetserret : Tǝṣallit

#Tadaksahak : Jinjiri

The tadaksahak jinjiri comes from Songhay

The Amud of Tamajeq has a cognate in Awjila

And Tǝṣallit of tetserret has cognat in most Amazigh languages and it's a Amazighized loanword from Arabic

Correspondances :

#Awjila :
ažǝvu = hair

#Tamajeq :
tažifa = long hair, a lot of hair on the head

I wonder how in some cases the proto-Amazigh *β becomes F in tamajeq and in other cases H or W

*ăwwəd

*ww regularly becomes bb in Zenaga cs, and ggʷ elsewhere. In Kabyle, secondary ww becomes bbʷ (ppʷ for women). In Tuareg ggʷ is delabialized.

Only Awjila seems to have maintained /ww/, but I am not sure that this word is attested there

The -f is attested in Ghadames and Awjila asaf/išf. It would not be surprising if Tamajeq had once a similar word.

Or was RB original? *BR would have ended up as br or wr (depending on the language) if the two consonants were adjacent (outside Ghadames and Awjila). But I am not sure what verb type it belonged to, so maybe there was a short vowel in between 🤷

I wonder why the /s/ in tallast didn't turn into /š/ in tadaksahak and tetserret .

In Awjila it's tšǝllišt with -š
