EU AI Act: accessibility as an emerging compliance requirement for high-risk AI systems - and a potential safety risk
As organisations prepare for the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (the AI Act), much of the focus has been on risk classification, data governance, oversight, and transparency obligations. However, one requirement has received far less attention, but may have a real impact in practice: accessibility.Under Article 16(l) of the AI Act, providers of high-risk AI systems must ensure that their systems comply with accessibility requirements in accordance with Directive (EU) 2016/2102 (the Web Accessibility Directive) and Directive (EU) 2019/882 (the European Accessibility Act).This is not simply a cross-reference; it requires providers to ensure that existing EU accessibility legislation is reflected in the design and development of high-risk AI systems, thereby integrating accessibility compliance into the broader regulatory framework.
