There are 3 sources for the quote oderint dum metuant. Accius, orig. Suetonius [Gaius 30], Life of Gaius, Seneca in ragedy Thyestes. my point is, for a Latin quote you must cite the exact sources to be fair. Have you figured out my Roadside Latin Emojigram yet?

A #polychrome #terracotta #relief in #palazzoMassimo alle Terme in #Rome from the late C1 BCE shows a scene from a now mostly lost #tragedy by #Accius, #Astyanax. We can see Hector's widow Andromache holding her son Astyanax back as Ulysses calls him, to throw him from the walls.

Stair 3: oderint dum metuant, "Let them hate, so long as they fear" — from the Atreus of the tragedian Accius (frag. 203–204 Ribbeck), but often quoted by later Romans (Cicero, Seneca, Caligula, etc)

He doesn't care who he needs, he can threaten, bomb, destroy their economy, sanction them personally or, if he gets REALLY pissed, shut down the UN by canceling all their visas and taking back the land and buildings
Lucius Accius "oderint dum metuant", everything about him is terrifying them

This is interesting. I wonder if the AI somehow got hung up on the role that Accius plays in the Brutus (his mistaken chronology re Livius) and just started hallucinating about Accius’s own praetexta *Brutus*.

Unhappy is he whose fame makes his misfortunes famous.

So, based on Pro Sestio, play seems to be Accius’ Eurysaces (telling story of Telamon expulsed from his fatherland), to which Aesopus added ”O Father” from Ennius Andromache, - which continues ”O father, o fatherland”. If correct (?), the plays would have sent poignant political messages.

Did a little translation work today and I am feeling both tickled and comforted by this Roman axiom about first drafts and initial ideas
