i did it in game by using a "play as X pokemon" actionreplay code, but it's very glitchy and sometimes leads to freezing
changing the sprites using a rom editor shouldn't be too hard though

Nice! Mine still has a really old modchip in it from back in the late 90s. It still works, though it's detected by the copy protection of certain later games in the console's library that I own legit copies of, and those have to be patched with codes via an ActionReplay.

Rebirth added a whole screen full of what are essentially ActionReplay cheats, but since it was a post-launch update not during the promotional phase there was no incentive for sensationalists to keep talking about it
