#ActivityPub
Same, I wish that atproto and activitypub had a baby so we got the separation between data and how we view it of atproto with the simpler to completely selfhost world of activitypub.

"a PDS that can hold ActivityPub accounts is already being explored"

Right there in the link they shared

Note that the area director responsible for RFC-5023 has done some interesting data portability work trying to retrofit an export API onto Mastodon, as a project of the DTI:

- alternative protocols/infra to fill this gap never emerged
- the semantic web focused on making the web more informational not more social
- OpenID didn't have counter-power even with it's successful adoption
- RSS, web mentions, ActivityPub all tried to build interop on top of the origin

I love and respect the pioneering work that ActivityPub did to decentralize social media. What I believe we need to solve the power imbalance on the web are for people to control their online presence, identity and connections.

Oh god, would this apply to things like ActivityPub or Nostr apps?

If 12 years ago I had built OIDC into my initial draft of what became ActivityPub, it would have been 10% less fucked.

It would still be 80% fucked, mind.

This is not for everyone though. Sometimes you need anonymity for reasons. Sometimes you need and want a locally moderated and protected community. The #fediverse and #ActivityPub is the right solution for that.

atproto is spinozist, activitypub is stalinist

As a longtime #fediverse and #mastodon user, I was initially skeptical towards #WSocial. Having read up on the very different philosophies behind #ActivityPub and #ATproto I realise they can't be compared on the same scale and the choice depends on what you want to achieve.
November 2, 2026 at 2:41 PM
atproto is kraterocratic, activitypub is stalinist
November 3, 2026 at 3:47 AM
atproto is antidisestablishmentarianist, activitypub is anarchist
November 3, 2026 at 12:45 PM
atproto is vegan, activitypub is minarchist
November 3, 2026 at 9:45 PM
atproto is ultramontanist, activitypub is libertarian

atproto is ultramontanist, activitypub is communalist

ATProto uses Internet domains (in reverse order) for type IDs. Ex:

com.example.image

ActivityPub uses IRIs (URLs) for type IDs. Ex:

https;//example·com/ns#Image

There are pros and cons to both approaches.

activitypub is better for git hosting than atproto, but please don’t mention the current state of forgefed
October 31, 2026 at 5:47 AM
atproto is paternalist, activitypub is syndicalist
