OpenAI has announced the formation of an independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence aims to provide mathematicians with greater input into the company's math-focused research. This announcement follows the publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, with OpenAI claiming that its internal model has resolved more than 100 additional open problems across various mathematical fields. The group, composed of nine prominent mathematicians, will serve in an advisory capacity, assessing the significance of new results and coordinating their release. However, the group will not have decision-making power over OpenAI's research pace or direction. The Institute for Advanced Study emphasized that while the group will offer advice, it does not hold decision-making authority at any AI company, with responsibility for decisions resting solely with the company. Notably, only one of the initial members, Camillo De Lellis from the Institute for Advanced Study, had signed an open letter from 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians who criticized AI labs for rushing to solve famous math problems. The letter argued that such rapid advancements threaten mathematicians' intellectual work as AI companies compete to outdo each other in solving complex mathematical challenges. The advisory group's members will not be paid but can provide unsolicited advice, go public with their views, and control their own membership, ensuring a degree of independence from OpenAI. The announcement highlights the growing tension between AI research and traditional mathematical communities, as AI systems increasingly tackle and solve complex mathematical problems that have long challenged human mathematicians.
