Omitting afronews, WEAA radio, & @baltimorebeat.bsky.social not only dismisses their work but the mammoth demographic of print/digital/&tc audience they serve—& their buying power.

Pubs ignoring local people *deserve* dwindling readerships—& they can't survey their way out of their own myopia.
Mini 🧵: earlier this week someone shared this survey a larger outlet is conducting. This list asks respondents to ID which outlets they get their news from. The list completely omits the three (!) outlets in this city that are Black-serving.

1/ Black women in rural areas are facing a "stark decline" in obstetric care. As hospitals close wards and specialists migrate to cities, the maternal mortality crisis enters a dangerous new phase. 🧵 @BlackPressUSA @afronews #BlackSky
Black Women in Rural Areas Grapple with Stark Decline in Obstetric Care | BlackPressUSA
The article discusses the severe decline in obstetric care for Black women living in rural areas, exacerbated by recent policy changes regarding Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Key points include: - Over a third of rural hospitals lack obstetric services, affecting access to care for many women. - Legislative responses like the Maternal Health Equity Under Medicaid Act aim to improve federal funding for maternal healthcare. - Rural residents face geographic and financial barriers to healthcare, with many living much farther from hospitals compared to urban residents. - Black women are disproportionately affected by higher maternal mortality rates. - Efforts to boost care include legislative initiatives and the utilization of doulas who provide additional support to pregnant women.

Imagine tracing your family tree and finding a conductor on the Underground Railroad. 🧵👇

Woman’s Search for Family’s Roots Leads to Ancestor John T. Ward – A Successful Entrepreneur and Conductor on the Underground Railroad | BlackPressUSA
Shanna Ward's quest to uncover her ancestral roots led her to discover her ancestor, John T. Ward, a formerly enslaved individual who gained freedom in 1827. He became a conductor on the Underground Railroad and co-founded one of the oldest Black-owned businesses, the Ward Transfer Line, in Ohio in 1881. Shanna published a book titled "The Bequest of John T. Ward," aiming to highlight stories of Black resistance during the antebellum era. Her research reflects on the importance of reclaiming Black history and identity, inspired by the success of genealogical explorations within the African American community.
