Bethune established the NCNW to unite Black women’s groups and address Black women’s concerns that were often ignored. In the midst of the Great Depression, NCNW aimed to tackle issues such as the inequality, housing discrimination and healthcare disparities that African American women faced. /2

Dr. Ferebee was a #CivilRights pioneer.

+ Civil rights icon Mary McLeod Bethune hand-selected Ferebee to succeed her as the 2nd president of the Nat'l Council of Negro Women (NCNW).

+ She traveled w/Dorothy Height to Selma to join a dangerous, early voter registration drive, 1963. And much more.

Correct! She is indeed the founder of NCNW.

She was also a major driving force in the creation of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the ONLY all-Black unit of the Women’s Army Corps to serve overseas (during WWII).

An early project of the NCNW was to assemble a cookbook that captured African American culture and furthered the cause of integration. The result was the Historical Cookbook of the American Negro (1958), which amplified heritage recipes with historical context to uplift Black women and families. /3

Being a part of NCNW was one the highlights of my college experience.
Do you know this woman?

She was often the only woman in the company of famous men. She also has my favorite photo bombs in all the famous Civil Rights Era photos.

She was the head of the Council of Negro Women & lived to 2010 at the age of 98.

Dorothy Height was born 114yrs ago today

In 1935, she left the NACW + founded the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), an organization with a more explicit civil rights agenda. Bethune’s friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the reasons for the creation of the NCNW.

That same year, Mason represented the National Council of Negro Women at the International Women’s Democratic Federation. She later served as a vice president under Mary McLeod Bethune and, in 1953, succeeded Bethune as president. The group is dedicated to empowering women of African descent. /5

Dr. Dorothy Height served as NCNW’s president from 1957 to 1997 and expanded the scope of its mission. Under her leadership, NCNW played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, raising funds for the Montgomery bus boycott and developing programs to fight poverty in the rural South. /4
